Muraya are a good hardy hedge and will cover the brick wall well. They do take some maintenance a few times a year to keep in shape. Hardy and fairly pest free.

I would check the width of Murraya. For a 75cm wide garden bed you’ll need to plant close to the front edge of the bed so the hedge doesn’t push on the wall. I would also choose a spreading ground cover for the under planting rather than mondo grass which doesn’t give great weed suppression. Over two or so years the hedge will take up the full garden bed so having any feature plants underneath is a waste.

A murraya hedge would look beautiful, another great plant for your area would be viburnum, both are hardy and suitable as a hedge to whatever height you want, I wouldn’t underplant as the above plants will fill the beds completely.

Thanks all. What if I clear the steam clear 30-40cm from the ground? Would that allow me to plant some groundcover or too much effort?

On a side note, would be fine to paint the red brick with a colour like monument?

Did you mean raise the brick edging to a height of 30-40cm to create a raised garden bed. Monument looks great as it highlights any planting.

Let the hedge grow and then see if you want to go to effort of pruning it to clear stems and underplant I gather you want a formal look which will take some work

Clear stems, is that what you meant, as Kate said it can be done but creates on going full time clipping. You can pleach taller plants and under plant them for a more formal look.

I love the pleached look but it is significant work to establish. Caroline - you could paint the wall but i wouldn’t. Your hedge will cover it soon enough and why add maintenance and work. I get the underplanting look you’re after, it’s one of my favs. If you don’t want the work of preaching plant something that will grow quickly and spill forward (and everywhere) even if the Murrayas stay natural. Something like a Jasmine would fill the bed while you’re waiting for the hedge to hedge and then still spill out at the bottom.

Jasmine is very versatile. Can be trimmed or rambling. Also easy to grow.
