Office
White built-in cabinetry with shelves, large pullout drawers and a desk are the stars of this office in a home near Baltimore. Katie Carlin Interiors kept the styling traditional to match the rest of the home. Storage and files are within easy reach of the desk, and the view is leafy through windows that have light-filtering shades. A neutral woven wallcovering completes the look.
Deep blue-green cabinetry combines with a wood desk and caramel-colored chair and the cabinet’s wood countertop in this home office in a new-build home in Encinitas, California, designed by M Prevost Design. The rich color scheme is dark and moody in this photo, but light from an overhead fixture and a window, which aren’t seen here, provide plenty of light. The built-in cabinet behind the desk is illuminated by three picture lights in brass tones that coordinate with the overhead fixture.
The grasscloth wallpaper on the ceiling of this San Diego home office was intended to complete the scene, Rhianna Jones of Tidal Interiors says. “It’s a visually full room with a bookcase, sweeping views and a gallery art wall,” she says. “The ceiling needed a treatment to complete the aesthetic of the space.” With so many people working from home, Jones predicts more homeowners will look to their ceilings for inspiration. “As we all spend more time in our home office staring up at the ceiling, I think a lot more clients will be open to spending their design dollars there.” Wallpaper: Rivets collection, Phillip Jeffries
The first thing Mack did was move the desk in front of the windows so the journalists could enjoy the view while they worked. She freshened up the walls with Benjamin Moore’s Silver Satin paint. She reused their existing large storage piece with its handy cabinets on the bottom and bookshelves on the top, added two USM Modular cabinets across from it and helped the couple designate what would be stored where, including office equipment, books and clothing. She brought color and pattern into the room with a flat-weave area rug and added a modern touch overhead with a Nelson pendant light.

Ample storage, layers of lighting and custom casework make this Gainesville, Florida, home office a standout space. Chinotto House Design created the room, which includes a reading nook with bookshelves for even more storage. There’s a mix of open and closed, painted and unpainted cabinetry, including drawers under the nook bench. The designers aced the lighting plan, which includes multiple pendants over the desk, a desk lamp and task lighting on the cabinetry behind and across from the desk, which also faces a window for natural light (not seen in this photo).
