I think that the perfect handle for your kitchen would be Hepburn Hardware's beautiful Bronte handle. Classic, understated and classy. I think that the black handles on black cabinetwork would be too heavy, and would probably lean to the polished nickel, or satin nickel finish as it has slightly warmer feel than the polished chrome.
Hepburn Hardware also make a good range of knobs and I have seen some kitchens with complementary Bronte knobs on the overheads, with Bronte handles on the base cabinetwork. They are more expensive than what you could buy from Bunnings, but have a quality feel to the touch, and it is something that you are going to use every day so spend wisely to get it right.
