Black Kitchen Island Ideas & Photos

A well balanced kitchen is created by utilising the existing unused fireplace as the niche for the freestanding gas oven and built in under-mount range hood. The expansive underbench cabinetry continues around to the existing timber windows, then drops to create a window seat sitting area. Within the back wall cabinetry there is an under-mount white stone sink with white and chrome sink mixer for hand washing. Sleek push-to-open overhead cabinetry are complemented by the herringbone layed textured subway tiles - with grout kept white to soften the over all look. A slimline LED Bar pendant light is suspended over the island bench for added interest and work space lighting. The black wenge island is a bold feature featuring 3 banks for push to open drawers. The fridge, dishwasher and double washing up sink is located in the butlers pantry to the left. Photo Credit: Anjie Blair Staging: DHF Property Styling

With significant internal wall remodelling, we removed an existing bedroom and utilised a lounge room to pave the way for a large open plan kitchen and dining area. We also removed an unwanted file storage room that backed onto the study and existing kitchen which allowed to the installation of a fully insulated temperature controlled cellar. A galley style kitchen was selected for the space and at the heart of the design is a large island bench that focuses on engagement and congregation and provides seating for 6. Acting as the activity hub of the kitchen, the island consists of split level benchtop which provides additional serving space for this family of avid entertainers. A standout feature is the large utility working wall that can be fully concealed when not in use and when open reveals not only a functional space but beautiful oak joinery and LED lit display shelving. The modern design of the kitchen is seen through the clean lines which are given an edge through the layering of materials resulting in a striking and rich palette. The all-black kitchen works well with the natural finishes and rawness of the timber finishes. The refined lines of the slimline Dekton benchtops complimented by the dark 2-pac and large format tiles make for a timeless scheme with an industrial edge. A fireplace was installed in the seating nook off the kitchen which was clad in rustic recycled timber, creating a textural element as well as bringing warmth and a sense of softness to the large space.

Industrial style is displayed beautifully here with scrap metal dining table, chunky handles, reclaimed timber bar stools, black board and oversized clock and matte black cabinetry. Far from being cold, this industrial styling is warm and inviting.
A simple shaker profile was used to add personality to a kitchen that combines the character of the old home, and the modern living of the new. Two toned cabinetry and benchtops highlight the subway tile splashback.

This contemporary kitchen has some unique features. The island has 3 levels – a lower level Calcutta marble countertop for prepping, rolling, or mixing; a mid-level with the same height and material as the main perimeter countertops (Caesarstone “Blizzard”); and a slightly higher level made with a custom-designed maple table that fits over the end of the island counter. Although the custom table required extra time and consideration, the challenge to design it was well worth it. It is a pivotal element in the space and is both highly functional and aesthetic. Its inventive flexible design allows it to be moved to any side of the island. Moreover, by simply adding a leg, it easily converts into a free-standing table that can be positioned anywhere in the room. This flexibility maximizes its versatility. It can be arranged so guests can dine in close proximity to family members or it can be relocated where food and drinks can be served off to the side and out of the way. The table’s custom maple finish ties in well with the existing fireplace and bookshelf in the sitting room.
