thinking about the angles and your comments about the lovely bright light from north, east and west suggest that the best option would be to use the angles as an opportunity for better passive solar design for an extension and my suggestions include a stage 1 new kitchen family room (remove old family room and keep old laundry storage) with the old kitchen converted to laundry and powder room and minimal change to other existing rooms (the new courtyard will add extra light to the dining room and extension and more direct access from carport to kitchen)..keeping the three bedrooms together while any children are small and adding a stage 2 master suite, remove old outside laundry (add new garden room and pool?) upgrade family bathroom and repurpose old master bedroom when children are older.. renovating the original rooms is very expensive for little extra gain when a simple skillion roofed extension at ground level with a generous gravel or paved terrace will offer a much better connection to the garden and more comfortable lifestyle with small children and the first extension will never be cheaper or easier to do than now so, apart from good maintenance, i would retain as much of the original home as possible and focus on connecting to the garden with a bright new kitchen "downstairs"..
the discrepancy with the side boundary will be clarified with accurate dimensions and angles of the building as located on the block
