Kitchen
Warming drawer. Another hot kitchen amenity for many of you is a warming drawer. Most warming drawers range in size from 27 to 30 inches wide and 11 to 12 inches high. They tend to be sized to fit above or below a wall oven. Because of their relatively small size, they heat up quickly and are handy for keeping food warm as you assemble the full meal or as you wait for all of your dinner guests to gather. You can also use it to warm up your plates, restaurant-style, without having to take up space in your main oven.
With 11ft ceilings, we decided to extend the cabinetry right to the ceiling in this historical restoration of this Victorian Home in the heart of the city. The kitchen is situated in the centre of the house and we decided to make it feel bigger by painting out the cabinetry in this rich navy. White Calcutta Marble counters and slab backsplash help to brighten the work spaces.
Drainage Having a space on the counter where you can drain your freshly washed dishes is a bonus. Here some shallow channels, know as drainer grooves, have been routed into the countertop. They increase in depth the closer they get to the sink, which aids the flow of drained water into the sink. These drainer grooves are a great way to have the practicality of a draining area without taking away from the look of the farmhouse sink.
Kitchen trend: Beautiful black. If you’re not too set on a colorful or an all-white kitchen, then look to the other end of the spectrum and consider choosing black as the dominant tone of your culinary zone. Natale says black will be one of the “It” colors in kitchen design next year. Why? “We spend so much time in our kitchens, and I think that more and more people want to make them a really special space. Black makes a strong, sleek statement,” he says. A simple way to introduce this classic, sophisticated color into your design is by opting for black cabinetry or countertops, says Natale, who designed this moody, elegant kitchen. He also suggests adding paneling to infuse the space with extra visual interest.
Kitchen trend: Modern traditional style. Designs that marry modern and traditional elements will be one of the most influential looks of 2015, according to Pillay, who says that homeowners are shunning ultrasleek, contemporary kitchens in favor of spaces that are “warm, homey and reflect themselves.” “This trend is affecting everything from cabinet design to colors, materials to textures. We are really mixing it up,” she says. “Flat-panel cabinet doors are being replaced with classic door profiles, such as Shaker doors,” for example. And materials are being mixed, such as stainless steel with wood, and wood with marble. Modern design elements, like glass backsplashes and chrome handles, are also being replaced with features that exude traditional style and charm, such as tile with black, pewter and brushed-nickel fittings, she says.
