Hardworking sink stations. As kitchens expand into multiple zones, the kitchen sink zone is following suit with what’s known as a workstation. Though relatively new to the market, workstations are quickly catching on. Built-in ledges support movable components such as a cutting board, colander and racks for draining and drying. It combines functions you might perform elsewhere in the kitchen, limiting the need to move back and forth between those areas.
Kitchen Countertops 7. Shades of charcoal and gray. While Houzz research shows that white remains the most popular color for kitchen countertops, many manufacturers are betting on interest in darker colors. In October, Silestone by Cosentino launched its Loft series, which features shades of charcoal and grays, as in the Corktown style shown here.

Faucets Last year at KBIS, we saw matte black on a lot of fixtures, and the finish was even more prevalent this year. Another trend in terms of kitchen faucets this year was contrasting and mix-and-match finishes. Those two trends merge in Moen’s new Sinema pull-down kitchen faucet, which comes with two handles, one with a coordinating finish and a second with a contrasting finish and Art Deco-inspired shell motif. The faucet is available in chrome, matte black, polished nickel and stainless. Matte black faucets come with a contrasting brushed gold handle; the metallic faucets come with a contrasting matte black handle.
Faucets Brizo launched its Odin kitchen collection at KBIS, as well as beverage and instant hot faucets that match a variety of its collections. Brizo’s new Odin kitchen collection, shown here and available in the fall, comes with two spout shapes and seven possible finishes. The handles are sold separately from the faucet body, allowing customers to personalize the look of their fixture by choosing a handle in metal, teak or a combination of the two. The faucets are available in polished chrome, stainless, polished nickel, polished gold, luxe gold and matte black. In addition to this new line, Brizo launched InstaHot faucets and new beverage faucets that coordinate with the brand’s variety of kitchen faucet collections. The InstaHot faucets can be used to provide at-the-ready hot water for tea, coffee or other purposes. The beverage faucets are intended to deliver purified drinking water and are compatible with various filtration systems.
Engineered quartz Though marble seems to be the most popular natural stone mimicked by engineered quartz, it’s not the only source of inspiration. Khalo, part of Dekton’s new Avantgarde collection, resembles the look of Patagonia granite. It features black, pale gold and coffee tones.

Composite Sink Composite Some modern sinks are made from a composite of granite and acrylic resin, and formed under a high compression to make them extremely durable and scratch-resistant. Pros: Composite sinks are nonporous, heat-resistant and hygienic. They’re available in a number of styles and finishes, and bring a uniform look to a contemporary kitchen. Cons: The hard surface of composite sinks is great for durability, but not so useful if you drop glassware on it. Also, if you’re looking for a natural material that forms a patina over time, a composite sink might not be the right choice for you.
