5 Creative Ways to Organise Dress Ups
Whatever type of make believe or dress up your children like to play, having them organised is important
Do you have a child who dreams of visiting Mars, fighting fires or nursing injured animals back to health? Do you have tutus or masks breeding in your toy room? It can be pretty frustrating for both parent and child when your little one wants a particular outfit and you can’t find it or can only find part of the costume.
1. Create a mini-wardrobe
Lots of stores now sell little timber clothes rails for kids’ outfits and you can pick one up from most department stores. These are also great for hanging dress-ups as well as everyday clothing.

Pick up a little rack and a pack of kids’ clothes hangers and set up a dressing station with all their dress-ups hung and easy to see. This is great for outfits and items such as capes and scarves.
Consider separating your children’s outfits into categories such as:
- Accessories (necklaces, rings, car keys, wallets and watches)
- Masks
- Hats
- Uniforms
- ‘Work’ items (doctor’s kits, nursing supplies and vet instruments).
3. Design a wall display
Recently at Simpy Organised, I worked with a family who loved dressing up with masks. They had a collection of around 30 masks and because they were quite bulky it was getting difficult to store them in a way that kept them in shape.

We came up with the idea of hanging all the masks on a wall with hooks and creating an amazing wall display. There were many interesting masks that were easy for the kids to grab when they wanted to play, but the family could also enjoy looking at them every day.

4. Utilise under-bed storage
Do you love keeping dress-ups but don’t use them all that regularly? There are some great under-bed storage solutions that are excellent for storing and organising kids’ dress-up collections. Keeping dress-ups under the bed means that your children can pull them out when they need them, but the outfits won’t take up precious space day-to-day.

5. Repurpose suitcases
I’ve seen some beautiful dress-up storage where people have used vintage suitcases or old travel trunks to store kids’ costumes. These are large, so offer a generous amount of storage, and usually portable, so you can keep them one your spare room but bring it into the living area when the kids want to play. And because they are a suitcase, they can easily be integrated into the make-believe play.

Remember too that costume outfits won’t fit your kids forever, so every six months or so go through and donate the pieces your kids have outgrown to make room for the ones they still enjoy wearing.
