Before & After: A Cathedral-Like Kitchen With Soft Texture & Tone
High ceilings, curves, fluted features and beautiful tactile details elevate this white kitchen into the stratosphere
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
- To brighten up the existing kitchen and create something unique but timeless.
- The client wanted a soft palette with interesting details and texture.
- It was important for us to improve the flow and make better use of the space.
The kitchen before works.
Starting Point
The space prior to renovations was dark and disjointed. The exposed beams were unpainted timber and the previous benchtops were black granite. The fridge was in the middle of the room and it created an impractical divide.

…And the expansive ceiling with its exposed beams. It’s such a beautiful, bright space now.
Materials palette:
- Barrington bar handles in matt brass from Momo Handles.
- Two-pack polyurethane Shaker-style cabinet doors with 30-millimetre frames.
- R38 ribbed panels from Scandinavian Profiles (except on the curved part of the island bench).
- Benchtops in Caesarstone Adamina (on the back wall we used a 20-millimetre thickness, and on the island bench we designed a 40-millimetre ‘sandwich’ with three-millimetre brass edging in between).
- Calacatta round penny tiles by Evo Tile + Stone on the splashback.
- Evo Travertine by Evo Tiles + Stone on the floor.
Key pieces of furniture/fittings:
- Barstools from Emporium Avenue.
- Pendant light above island bench from Contessa Lighting.

What challenges did you have to work around?
We had to move the waste pipe by chasing into the concrete slab, but because underfloor heating was installed, we had to get a specialist out to scan the floor to make sure we didn’t chase into the floor heating.
