Meet My Houzz: The Phangs
A young couple in Perth find happiness in their newly completed home
Newlywed couple, Peter and Angel Phang, completed their modern and comfortable home in 2015 in the Perth suburb of Wandi. Angel works in the hospitality industry, but has always had a deep passion for interior design and photography. Peter is a professional chef and enjoys doing lot of the handy work around the house, including laying out the courtyard, installing cabinet fittings, and other bits and pieces.
The couple make a great team, with Angel focusing on the interior design of the home and Peter getting creative with the landscaping and odd jobs around the home. They regularly host parties with their friends and family, who always pass on compliments about the home’s decor.

How did you come across your home?
We had been looking for an area in Perth to build our home in for months when we finally came across Wandi. We immediately fell in love with it. It has plenty of parks and beautiful greenery – it’s a little bit of heaven on Earth, and only 25 minutes away from Perth’s CBD.

What’s your favourite room in the house?
Definitely our living room. We enjoy having a coffee in the morning in our living room and looking out onto our little courtyard, and it’s the place for us to relax in when we get home from work. We put a thick Moroccan rug in here to soften the hard tiles, and a fiddle-leaf fig to make the room feel welcoming.
We also enjoy the courtyard a lot as an outdoor setting, and for the occasional barbecue. Peter installed decking tiles and artificial turf to cover the hard surface. He bought secondhand planter boxes from Gumtree and put rosemary in them to place in front of the air-conditioning unit, to cover it once it grows. On the side fence he also added clumping bamboo for screening.

What’s your favourite item in the house?
It has to be the dining chairs that I got from Freedom. The grey and soft-blue colours contrasting against the timber is really unique and I know they won’t date.

How you would describe your decorating style?
Cosy, casual, simple and welcoming. We decorated the house in a way that will makes us always love coming home. To come home after a big day at work is something that we look forward to.

What’s your hot design tip?
Pick a main neutral colour as your base, you can always add one or two more colours for your feature items. Don’t be scared to put a in large mirror if you have a small space – it will create the illusion of space. You should also try to move things around until you’re happy with its location. By simply moving them, you can have a better perspective and sometimes make the room more spacious.

What lesson have you learned from your new build?
We were really happy with the outcome of the home and I think that’s because we knew exactly what we wanted going in. I think that’s a lesson many of us can take away – have confidence in the design you want and make sure you see it through.

Angel regularly sits at the kitchen island to check her emails, and enjoys being in the bright, open space.
As Peter is a chef, he needed a well-functioning kitchen to prepare delicious dishes in. They invested in a 900 millimetre Westinghouse oven that gets the job done.
A corner shelf from Ikea in the dining room provides Angel with another opportunity to add some decor to the space. She keeps her tea and coffee stored here in easy reach.
The compact laundry is located next to the bathroom and is in keeping with the rest of the home’s simple decor. The ‘laundry’ sign is from Typo and the stool is another Ikea find. It’s used to reach the higher cabinets in here.
Angel and Peter’s bedroom is a relaxing retreat, which Angel has decorated with simple furnishings, including these grid cushions on the bed from Adairs. The two mirrors, one against the wall and another on the dressing table, help to make the space appear larger.
This bedside table and lamp, also in the main bedroom, are both from Kmart.
In the guest bedroom, a tufted upholstered bedhead makes the space cosy, and a friendly A4 print from One Tiny Tribe sits next to the bed to welcome visitors.
Outside in the courtyard, the table is a Freedom purchase and a geometric-shaped umbrella provides the couple with shade.

This was a new build for the Phangs, who wanted to create an abode big enough for the two of them and for guests when they visit. The couple bought one of the smaller blocks in the area – 220 square metres – as they wanted a home that would be low-maintenance, as well as a budget-friendly build.
The three-bedroom two-bathroom home was built with an airy open-plan living area, and high ceilings to make it feel bigger. They also laid 600 x 600 millimetre travertine tiles throughout the house, to give the space a clean and modern aesthetic. The addition of the courtyard area has proved to be one of their most valuable spaces, with the Perth sunshine providing the perfect weather to entertain in.
