My Home Life: Pip Brett of Jumbled and Iglou
Pip Brett, the founder of the popular Orange-based stores Jumbled and Iglou, takes us inside her colourful home
Pip Brett is the creative mind behind popular homewares store Jumbled and clothing store Iglou, in the gorgeous NSW town of Orange. She launched Iglou 11 years ago and Jumbled five years ago, after finally getting the chance to rent a shopfront she had been waiting to come up for lease. “It finally came up for rent and I snapped it up before I could really think about what was going to go in there, so I called it Jumbled – it’s a jumble of all of the things that I love,” she says.
The online store gained popularity on Instagram, with followers and shoppers who love the same mismatched style of colour, art and fun supporting Pip. This distinct ‘Jumbled’ style can be seen throughout Pip’s own home in Orange, which she shares with her husband, two kids and their adorable Labradoodle Molly. Read the full interview below.

How did you and your home meet?
A friend, who is a real estate agent, rang me to say he had found the most perfect house for us. He was so right – it was painted yellow inside and out, floral wallpaper everywhere, carpet in the kitchen and teeny tiny, but it was on one of the best streets in Orange with a lovely north-facing backyard. We instantly fell in love and made an offer that day before it went on the market – all of the stars aligned.

Can you please draw a picture of your house and tell us what you love about living here?
I love living in our house because it’s warm, bright and we are surrounded by all of the things we love. We are right in the middle of town so we can walk everywhere.
Life is just great in Orange and I love this town for so many reasons. We have everything that anyone could ever want here. It is beautiful, there is good food, wine, shopping, lovely people, the four seasons (and sometimes even in one day). There is always something going on and there are a lot of amazing people doing really interesting things. I’m so proud of my lovely town and I think Orange has a really bright future.

What’s your favourite room and what do you love about it?
I love our kitchen and open-plan living room the best. Our home is an old miner’s cottage that was super small. We lived in it for about four years before we renovated, and the extra space and light was life changing. I often stand at the kitchen bench and think that I would have been almost standing outside in the old house.

How do you define your style?
I would say mixing, with not a whole lot of matching. It is a bit of a jumble, but I love each and every item and they each often have their own little story.

What inspires your design aesthetic?
I LOVE colour! I can’t help it. Orange, green, mint and pink against a white backdrop has got me at the moment. I also LOVE art. I follow a lot of artists on social media and I get my daily dose of inspiration there. Miranda Skoczek, Annie Everingham, Kyah Wilson, Mia Oatley, Spacecraft Studio, Frida Kahlo, Ken Done and Kezz Brett are just some of my favourites.
My home and the interiors we help create are often based around an artwork and colour before anything else. I also have a design philosophy of ‘more is more, less is a bore’ intertwined with ‘life is short, buy the artwork’, which can be a dangerous, but usually exciting.

What do you love to make?
I love to make a killer gin and tonic, but design wise, I love nothing more than pulling together colours, patterns, textures and goodies that you wouldn’t necessarily place together, but doing it in a way so that they all sing.

What’s your proudest design moment?
I guess it would be seeing how people have really embraced the Jumbled aesthetic. Our customers and followers seem to respond best to our colourful mixing, not-so-much matching approach to interiors. I will also be proud when The Sonic opens, which is our new project.
We purchased an old Masonic Hall right in the middle of Orange and we are just about to start the renovation. It is going to be a concept store of coffee, fashion and home – all of the things that make me VERY happy! We have been planning for the last 12 months with the very clever girls of Studio Esteta in Melbourne. We are combining both of my stores, Iglou and Jumbled, under the one roof with some other exciting additions. We are set to open at the start of September so we have a busy couple of months ahead.

What do you love to do in your spare time? How do you relax?
We haven’t had much time to relax of late, as we are in full swing renovating the old Masonic Hall, but I do love nothing more than watching ABC murder mysteries on the TV in the bath with a glass of wine. When we first got a TV in the bathroom I dropped a few remotes in and ruined them, but now I have discovered the humble zip lock bag!
