Rejoice in the Charm of Timber-Lined Walls
There's something about timber interior walls that makes the heart skip a beat – here's how they could work at your house
Whether light and breezy beach style is your dream look, or you lean more towards rustic French country, interior timber-lined walls add swathes of texture and charm to any house. If you’re lucky enough to live in an older house that already sports these lovely walls, celebrate them by making them look their best. If not, these ideas might just inspire you to work some timber into your place.
Delightful decor. What better way to play up the character of this ‘mature’ cottage than with vintage fabric and furniture finds? Modernise an old rustic table with industrial-style wheels, add whimsy with florals, and source antique crates, buckets and books for a homey – and utterly irresistible – dining area.
Feature wall. Mixing up materials always makes a house more interesting, so see if you can find a way to work some beautiful timber into the walls of your home. The natural timber used in this seating nook makes it look anything but plain.
Worth considering. Kitchens are a natural fit for timber-lined walls (you don’t even need a splashback), and this one is a good example of how well they can work in a modern space. Don’t dismiss timber as an interior wall option in a new build or renovation just because your home hasn’t been around for centuries.
Tied together. Soaring vaulted ceilings certainly help make this living/dining area feel light and bright, but I especially love how the timber-panelled far wall echoes the ceiling lines. A contrasting weathered timber frame around the built-in shelving helps anchor the space.
Other colours have a place, though. We love the two-toned timber walls in this welcoming kitchen.
Dare to dream. This bedroom is all the more gorgeous thanks to the panelled feature wall behind the bed. If you have plenty of natural light beaming into your bedroom, such a wall could work just as well for you. Sunlight bounces light around a white room, and highlights the timber grooves nicely – texture is key to making a space more interesting.
Deep sleep. Opting for a dark stain on timber-lined walls is dramatically different, and what a way to create an oh-so-cosy bedroom. Think about whether to install timber vertically or horizontally – rooms with lower ceilings will gain the height they need when planks run up and down.
Antique effect. Farmhouse kitchens are just the place for rustic timber interior walls. These look like they’ve been here for an eternity, but the look could just as easily be recreated in a newer abode.
Delightful detail. This cute kitchen oozes charm, partly because of those fabulous walls, but also because of the other materials chosen to complement them. Chunky timber floating shelves, the grey-grouted splashback and a grey-toned benchtop add character aplenty.
Linear leverage. Timber walls can look superbly sleek and modern, too. Notice how the lined cabinet door and drawer fronts highlight the wide timber planks on the walls. Clever.
Country charm. This eat-in kitchen plays up its wonderful walls with vintage pendants and a white-painted hutch displaying colourful kitchenware. Keeping to a theme is sometimes the best way to make the most of your home’s natural assets.
View finder. While timber-lined walls often look best painted white, when a view is as stunning as this one, it makes sense to capitalise on it. Pale blue is just the right shade to draw your eye out to that serene water view.
