Who lives here: A couple
Location: Paradise Point, Queensland
Room purpose: A kitchen in a newly built home measuring approximately 4.3 x 4.3 metres, including a walk-in pantry. The kitchen was designed to cater equally to both cooking and entertaining, with a minibar and walk-in pantry concealed behind an oak-look cabinetry wall.
Approximate budget: AU$60,000

Brief
The design brief was to create a contemporary kitchen with a relaxed coastal feel, combining timber, white cabinetry and a panelled feature.

The practical and functional elements, including appliances, were to be integrated and concealed behind cabinetry where possible, yet easily accessible.

Maximising natural light was vital, and the breakfast bar needed to accommodate three to four bar stools.

Starting point
We designed the floor plan of this entire home and were restricted by a narrow frontage.

The starting point for the kitchen design was positioning the island bench to ensure it was as wide as possible without encroaching on the walkway that separates the kitchen and staircase.
Zephyr and Stone
We worked with the builder and cabinetmaker and designed and positioned the splashback window to run the full length of the kitchen – installed so the cooktop benchtop and overhead cupboards run seamlessly into the window frame – hiding the aluminium frame completely so only glass is visible. This adds to the contemporary aesthetic by creating minimal clean lines in the space.

Key design aspects

Colour palette: The coastal scheme combines the following:
  • Light grey.
  • Pale timber.
  • White natural fibres including rattan.

Materials palette:
  • Porcelain tiles and benchtops.
  • Timber-laminate cabinetry.
  • White thermolaminated/vinyl cabinetry.

Key pieces of furniture/fittings:
  • Polytec Coastal Oak Woodmatt cabinetry.
  • Polytec Thermolaminated ‘Classic White Matt’ cabinetry.
  • Laminam Porcelain benchtops in Bianco Assoluto Matt from Ace Stone + Tiles.
  • Relm Furniture Crop ‘White’ 660-millimetre stools in American oak.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures
Balance is always key when we design any space, and is achieved by carefully balancing the chosen materials.

In this kitchen, white cabinets and benchtops in the kitchen and walk-in pantry contrast with the full-height timber joinery wall and open shelving.

Timber bar stools were also essential to contrast against the white breakfast bar and visually connect the timber features in the space.

White surface-mounted downlights were chosen for their simple design, providing a subtle feature that keeps the space feeling light, open and uncluttered.

What challenges did you work around?

Why do you think this room works?
We managed to incorporate a lot of features in a a relatively modest footprint – including a walk-in pantry, ample storage, a hidden minibar and a full-sized island bench.

It balances contemporary and minimal design with a coastal colour scheme to create a sophisticated yet understated and relaxed aesthetic.

The ample benchtop on either side of the cooktop provides abundant space for preparing and cooking. A long benchtop and storage in the hidden walk-in pantry provides a great space to store and prepare food, while keeping small appliance on the bench hidden behind closed doors from the main kitchen.

And the appliances – including the fridge/freezer, dishwasher and range hood – are integrated behind cabinetry to maintain clean lines.
