Julia FairleySeptember 3, 2021
Chief Sub-Editor and Writer, Houzz Australia and New Zealand. I love design and architecture that is thoughtful, sophisticated and champions an element of the unexpected. Before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts at UNSW and becoming a journalist, I studied interior architecture. For over a decade I have interviewed inspiring creative minds from around the world to write about design in its many different forms. Recently, I have also become an accidental gardener, to everyone's surprise.

A sexy subject it may not be, but a well-designed garage is much more than just a place to park your wheels. Garages also deliver on style and offer storage for all manner of bulky items. Curious what’s trending? Here are the 10 most-popular garages, as saved by Houzz users in the first six months of 2021, chosen from images uploaded by professionals around the world from July 2020 to July 2021.
Borland Architecture
1. Barnyard beauty
Barn doors made a surprise appearance in the 10 most-saved home offices of 2021, and here they are again. Borland Architecture’s rural-inspired garage in Melbourne, Victoria, turns a space that is sometimes an eyesore into an elegant parking place that’s worthy of attention.
Green Sheep Collective
2. Urban style
Timber battens and panelling became the darlings of interior design several years ago. Here, they’re used to great rhythmic effect on this facade in Melbourne, Victoria by Green Sheep Collective. In fact, the dark garage door is so well-framed by the lighter timber panelling that the recessed opening almost disappears into the structure around it…

…This second image of the same garage also made the list of most-saved photos. The laundry-garage combo caught many people’s eyes – it has clear appeal for homeowners who are wondering where in their floor plan they can squeeze in a laundry.
Macquarie Garage Doors
3. Coastal chic
Fans of renovating duo Kyal and Kara of The Block TV fame will likely recognise this Central Coast garage in NSW from one of their latest builds. Its Australia-meets-Palm-Springs style captures that outdoorsy feel so many of us strive for…
Macquarie Garage Doors
…In fact, you liked this garage so much that this second image of it appeared in the top most-saved results…

…And even a third picture made the cut.
Clopay
4. Farmhouse fun
Even though this USA garage uses a similar timber, stone and white materials palette to the one before it, this design evokes an entirely different aesthetic. The barn-style aesthetic speaks of regional architecture and ample space to park a fleet of cars.

We also love how the timber of the garage doors punctuates what would otherwise be an all-white facade, elevating the whole exterior. Apparently we weren’t the only ones who love it.
Khachi Design + Build
5. Style meets storage
What’s interesting with this garage in Toronto, Canada, is that the most-saved image of this design was not the one showing the car or the motorbike. Instead, it was this photograph, which reveals a neat tool-storage zone by Khachi Design + Build.

It’s proof that the good old backyard shed is twins with the garage in terms of their storage functions.
Jannat Vasi Interior Design
6. Strike a pose
Rev heads rejoice, your dream of a garage that takes centrestage in a home has come true in Mumbai, India. Now the only question that remains is whether this photo was saved for the car or the garage design by Jannat Vasi Interior Design. There are some things metrics can never tell us, but we’re guessing both.
Toscano Constructions
7. Sunshine state
Easy, breezy and bright is the tune of this garage in Brisbane, Queensland. Toscano Constructions has expertly retained depth and views with the open timber battens, which offer a fresh take on the iconic Queenslander design when painted crisp white.
LJW Building Company
8. Nod to nostalgia
This sunny Sydney carport from LJW Building Company shows that good design need not be pretentious. While there’s a place for high-end glamour, we still cherish the character of weatherboards and the functionality of the age-old carport, both of which continue to serve us well.
Sweeney Designbuild
9. Freestanding focus
Wondering whether the most-loved garages are all variations on monochrome and timber schemes? The vibrant palette of this standalone garage in Burlington, USA, shows that bright tones are still beloved by Australian audiences. That plus the roomy proportions by Sweeney Designbuild, which comfortably fit three vehicles, with room to spare.
Signature Coatings
10. Materials matter
This image took us by surprise when it secured a spot on the list of the top 10 garages. Curiosity aside, it shows that readers are not just interested in how a design looks, but also with how it functions. The attention to the material of this driveway in Ohio, USA by Signature Coatings, is proof that function is as important as form.
