This home was a blend of modern and traditional, mixed finishes, classic subway tiles, and ceramic light fixtures. The kitchen was kept bright and airy with high-end appliances for the avid cook and homeschooling mother. As an animal loving family and owner of two furry creatures, we added a little whimsy with cat wallpaper in their laundry room.

L’élégance par excellence Il s’agit d’une rénovation totale d’un appartement de 60m2; L’objectif ? Moderniser et revoir l’ensemble de l’organisation des pièces de cet appartement vieillot. Nos clients souhaitaient une esthétique sobre, élégante et ouvrir les espaces. Notre équipe d’architecte a ainsi travaillé sur une palette de tons neutres : noir, blanc et une touche de bois foncé pour adoucir le tout. Une conjugaison qui réussit à tous les coups ! Un des exemples les plus probants est sans aucun doute la cuisine. Véritable écrin contemporain, la cuisine @ikeafrance noire trône en maître et impose son style avec son ilot central. Les plans de travail et le plancher boisés font échos enter eux, permettant de dynamiser l’ensemble. Le salon s’ouvre avec une verrière fixe pour conserver l’aspect traversant. La verrière se divise en deux parties car nous avons du compter avec les colonnes techniques verticales de l’immeuble (qui ne peuvent donc être enlevées).

The basement bathroom took its cues from the black industrial rainwater pipe running across the ceiling. The bathroom was built into the basement of an ex-school boiler room so the client wanted to maintain the industrial feel the area once had.

Unique black and white master suite with a vivid Moroccan influence.Bold Cement tiles used for the floor and shower accent give the room energy. Classic 3x9 subway tiles on the walls keep the space feeling light and airy. A mix media of matte black fixtures and satin brass hardware provided a hint of glamour. The clean aesthetic of the white vessel Sinks and freestanding tub balance the space.

APARTMENT BERLIN VII Eine Berliner Altbauwohnung im vollkommen neuen Gewand: Bei diesen Räumen in Schöneberg zeichnete THE INNER HOUSE für eine komplette Sanierung verantwortlich. Dazu gehörte auch, den Grundriss zu ändern: Die Küche hat ihren Platz nun als Ort für Gemeinsamkeit im ehemaligen Berliner Zimmer. Dafür gibt es ein ruhiges Schlafzimmer in den hinteren Räumen. Das Gästezimmer verfügt jetzt zudem über ein eigenes Gästebad im britischen Stil. Bei der Sanierung achtete THE INNER HOUSE darauf, stilvolle und originale Details wie Doppelkastenfenster, Türen und Beschläge sowie das Parkett zu erhalten und aufzuarbeiten. Darüber hinaus bringt ein stimmiges Farbkonzept die bereits vorhandenen Vintagestücke nun angemessen zum Strahlen. Kaplan Architects, AIA Location: Oakland, CA, USA We were asked by the client to design an addition to their existing two story Cape Cod style house. The existing house had two bedrooms with one bath on the second level. They wanted to create an in-law type space for aging parents that would be easily accessible from the main level of the house. We looked at various ways to develop the extra space they wanted, including a separate detached in-law unit. They went with a scheme that has the new space attached to the back of the house. During the planning stage, they also decided to add a second level over the new addition which converted one of the existing bedrooms into a master bedroom suite. The final scheme has a new in-law suite at the ground level and a master bedroom, bath, walk-in closet, and bonus craft room on the second level. We designed the addition to look like it was part of the original house construction and detailed the interior and exterior with that approach in mind. Mitch Shenker Photography

Firstly, consider your space. Is it rectangular or are you working with a long, narrow room? This will determine how many wet walls you can accommodate, and if a bathtub can fit. For example, in a narrow room a freestanding bathtub may not work, and a one-wall layout that lines up shower, toilet and vanity on the same wall will make sense in most cases. (It’s also the most budget-friendly option in terms of plumbing). Maybe separate rooms for toilet and shower make sense? Maybe you want to work with a window above a bathtub or in the shower. You may live in an old house where you can keep some of the original character of the home, or you may be working with a small apartment space. All these considerations are vital in deciding on which layout will work best for you. Have a look at some popular ideas to get started.

2 Consider How You Use Your Bathroom

Once you’ve gathered some inspiration, have a think about who is using the room, and how they will be using it. A single guy needs a lot less storage than a teenage girl, and a family bathroom may need to consider elderly family members. Making your bathroom wheelchair accessible could save you thousands down the line. You may also want to accommodate a washer and dryer in the bathroom, since it’s where clothes are taken off frequently. Also consider safety and cleaning. Ensure no-one will slip and hurt themselves, and consider that many little tiles will make for many little nooks for grime to accumulate, whereas big surfaces like a sink that is integrated with the vanity counter, or a big mirror will make wiping down the surface much easier than having sinks sitting on top or an intricately designed mirror.

You may want to consider a wooden floor for something different and pair it with simple white vanity and cabinets, or you may want to go for the steampunk look with bronze tubes and black walls. Consider what type of shower, bathtub (if any), toilet, sink and vanity you want. Maybe you have space for a generous spa with walk-in shower, or maybe you want a freestanding bath to be the feature of the room.
