The use of texture on walls, furnishings and fabrics, along with unexpected accents of deep orange, add a cozy feel to the open layout. “I used splashes of orange because it’s a favorite color of mine and of my clients’,” she says. “It’s a hue that lends itself to warmth and energy — this house has a lot of warmth and energy, just like the owners.” With a nod to the family’s South American heritage, a large, wood architectural element greets visitors as soon as they step off the elevator. The jigsaw design — pieces of cherry wood that fit together like a puzzle — is a work of art in itself. Visible from nearly every room, this central nucleus not only adds warmth and character, but also, acts as a divider between the formal living room and family room….. A beautiful collaboration of sage green subway glass tile and ocean mix pebble tile in a stunning California coastal home

Hood House is a playful protector that respects the heritage character of Carlton North whilst celebrating purposeful change. It is a luxurious yet compact and hyper-functional home defined by an exploration of contrast: it is ornamental and restrained, subdued and lively, stately and casual, compartmental and open. For us, it is also a project with an unusual history. This dual-natured renovation evolved through the ownership of two separate clients. Originally intended to accommodate the needs of a young family of four, we shifted gears at the eleventh hour and adapted a thoroughly resolved design solution to the needs of only two. From a young, nuclear family to a blended adult one, our design solution was put to a test of flexibility. The result is a subtle renovation almost invisible from the street yet dramatic in its expressive qualities. An oblique view from the northwest reveals the playful zigzag of the new roof, the rippling metal hood. This is a form-making exercise that connects old to new as well as establishing spatial drama in what might otherwise have been utilitarian rooms upstairs. A simple palette of Australian hardwood timbers and white surfaces are complimented by tactile splashes of brass and rich moments of colour that reveal themselves from behind closed doors. Our internal joke is that Hood House is like Lazarus, risen from the ashes. We’re grateful that almost six years of hard work have culminated in this beautiful, protective and playful house, and so pleased that Glenda and Alistair get to call it home.

Dual mirrors set atop 2x8 repose glass in Cucumber make for a stunning focal point. White washed baskets from Waterworks offer lovely storage options in this open vanity.

When the house was purchased, someone had lowered the ceiling with gyp board. We re-designed it with a coffer that looked original to the house. The antique stand for the vessel sink was sourced from an antique store in Berkeley CA. The flooring was replaced with traditional 1" hex tile.

Custom bathroom with an Arts and Crafts design. Beautiful Motawi Tile with the peacock feather pattern in the shower accent band and the Iris flower along the vanity. The bathroom floor is hand made tile from Seneca tile, using 7 different colors to create this one of kind basket weave pattern. This powder room sits between the kitchen and the home office. To maximize space, we built a furniture-like vanity with a vessel sink on top and a wall mounted faucet. We placed pocket doors on both sides, and wrapped the room in a custom-made wainscoting, painted green with a glazed finish.

Photographer: Diane Anton Photography This typically small guest bathroom was turned into an elegant French get away space. Pale green diamond tiles with white dots set the color scheme. The floor is white marble while the base and cornice are the green tiles. The hammered metal sink with exposed pipes keeps the space open giving a much larger appearance.

This bathroom features a striking, sage colored, glass-tiled, shower and brushed gold accents. A mid-century freestanding vanity, hexagon patterned porcelain tile flooring and white and gold drop style pendants add a layer of vintage charm to the space.
