This busy family wanted to update the main floor of their two-story house. They loved the area but wanted to have a fresher contemporary feel in their home. It all started with the kitchen. We redesigned this, added a big island, and changed flooring, lighting, some furnishings, and wall decor. We also added some architectural detailing in the front hallway. They got a new look without having to move!

This project was built on spec and pushed for affordable sustainability without compromising a clean modern design that balanced visual warmth with performance and economic efficiency. The project achieved far more points than was required to gain a 5-star builtgreen rating. The design was based around a small footprint that was located over the existing cottage and utilized structural insulated panels, radiant floor heat, low/no VOC finishes and many other green building strategies.

A zen, modern look where the feeling throughout the home is sophisticated yet comfortable. We captured the tranquil vibe with slate-inspired wall cladding throughout the main areas which is complimented with grey smoked glass on railings inside and out. The fabrics and finishes are earthy and neutral with subtle pops of color displayed in custom artwork. Custom wood millwork feature dark walnuts and champagne metallic finishes which add warmth to the matte porcelain flooring and stone surfaces.

The colour scheme here is a continuation of the master bedroom chocolate tones. The bronze ceramic tiles reflect light and give a luxurious feel to the room. The WC and basin are in separate alcoves, lit by large dark Italian Rust coloured Tapering Wall Lights. The sculptural basin is highlighted by carefully placed up-lights.
The matt bronze tiles which clad the walls and floor add to the moody feel of this sanctuary bathroom. The client can tune out the rest of the world and enjoy the built in TV which is placed above the step-up bath.
The step into the bath and the bath surround have small up-lights and there si a shadow gap above a plinth around the ceiling with concealed LED tape lights. The lighting design is intended to be alternated between bright, task lighting and atmospheric secondary lighting adding to the feeling of relaxation and luxury.
All architectural features are designed by Gemma Zimmerhansl.
