This adorable beach cottage is in the heart of the village of La Jolla in San Diego. The goals were to brighten up the space and be the perfect beach get-away for the client whose permanent residence is in Arizona. Some of the ways we achieved the goals was to place an extra high custom board and batten in the great room and by refinishing the kitchen cabinets (which were in excellent shape) white. We created interest through extreme proportions and contrast. Though there are a lot of white elements, they are all offset by a smaller portion of very dark elements. We also played with texture and pattern through wallpaper, natural reclaimed wood elements and rugs. This was all kept in balance by using a simplified color palate minimal layering. I am so grateful for this client as they were extremely trusting and open to ideas. We were approached by a Karen, a renowned sculptor, and her husband Tim, a retired MD, to collaborate on a whole-home renovation and furnishings overhaul of their newly purchased and very dated “forever home” with sweeping mountain views in Tigard. Karen and I very quickly found that we shared a genuine love of color, and from day one, this project was artistic and thoughtful, playful, and spirited. We updated tired surfaces and reworked odd angles, designing functional yet beautiful spaces that will serve this family for years to come. Warm, inviting colors surround you in these rooms, and classic lines play with unique pattern and bold scale. Personal touches, including mini versions of Karen’s work, appear throughout, and pages from a vintage book of Audubon paintings that she’d treasured for “ages” absolutely shine displayed framed in the living room. Partnering with a proficient and dedicated general contractor (LHL Custom Homes & Remodeling) makes all the difference on a project like this. Our clients were patient and understanding, and despite the frustrating delays and extreme challenges of navigating the 2020/2021 pandemic, they couldn’t be happier with the results. Being the second home we have designed for this family, The challenge was creating spaces that were functional for this active family!. With the help of Jim Bulejski Architects, we completely gutted/renovated the first floor. Adding onto the original back of the house creating the new kitchen space any chef would want to create in. Renovated the original/existing "kitchen" to be an eat-in and side extension to the kitchen and coffee bar area. We added a working laundry room for the kids to dump backpacks and sports gear and a refuge for her 5 dogs, a fresh den/seating area for the mom and dad, and last but not least, updated the old Living Room to create a cozy space for the kids and adults to retreat to! Using cool grays, navy, white and gold accents, these spaces are as gorgeous as they are comfortable.

The family room features a large, L-shaped Italian leather sectional that frames out the seating area. The pewter leather creates a contrast against the white walls and light grey area rug. We selected an oversized boucle bench and two channeled ottomans to round out the seating and add some texture into the space.

Photographer Derrick Godson Clients brief was to create a modern stylish games room using a predominantly grey colour scheme. I designed a bespoke feature wall for the games room. I created an abstract panelled wall in a contrasting grey colour to add interest and depth to the space. I then specified a pool table with grey felt to enhance the interior scheme. Contemporary lighting was added. Other items included herringbone floor, made to order interior door with circular detailing and remote controlled custom blinds. The herringbone floor and statement lighting give this home a modern edge, whilst its use of neutral colours ensures it is inviting and timeless.

A family room – also referred to as a rumpus room or games room – is more casual and informal than a living room. Designed for relaxation and entertainment, it’s the go-to spot to kick back, watch TV, play music or while away hours playing a gaming console. Because it serves multiple functions, it often requires lots of storage space for the likes of DVDs, books and toys, and should be able to include everything from a comfy couch and occasional chairs to a TV, entertainment unit, desk and bookshelf. Before you start buying furniture and decorating, look at your storage needs. Families with movie buffs or gaming enthusiasts will also need cabinets that are capable of stowing and concealing small electronics like DVD players and game consoles. And, if someone is still studying in your home, an office desk with drawers or a file cabinet is a worthy investment that will encourage good work habits.

How can I decorate my rumpus room?

The family room is often tucked away from more formal areas, so use the opportunity to get creative with your furniture and decor. Key furniture items, such as your couch and entertainment unit, are best kept neutral, so they can outlast any interior updates, while armchairs, coffee tables and any storage solutions can be more offbeat. Add colourful accessories to brighten up the space, and remember you can always swap these out should you get sick of your colour scheme. Curtains, rugs, throws and pillows are an easy way to add colour, while mirrors, floor or table lamps and ceiling lights will help bounce light throughout the space. Wall-hung artwork is a temporary way to add style and character, or you could be brave and add a colourful accent wall instead. As the main living space in your home, your rumpus room should be welcoming and personality-filled, so be sure to decorate it with personal knickknacks and family photos, too.
