An architecturally designed home in rural Karaka with a strong injection of personality and modernity.
Client Brief:
The homeowners called for a kitchen to work harmoniously with the crisp and modern interior throughout the home. An oversized barn door creates a bold impact in the room and meant any kitchen design had to hold its own against this striking feature. Function-wise, the space had to be hard wearing and innovative for a family who love to entertain. The kitchen has mirrored the homeowners penchant for strong vertical styling on the exterior of the home by applying exacting clean lines and precise workmanship throughout. Using premium materials and a restricted colour palette, the result is a kitchen that connects with the overall aesthetic of the home and provides its homeowners with an indulgent yet highly practical space.

This family of 5 was quickly out-growing their 1,220sf ranch home on a beautiful corner lot. Rather than adding a 2nd floor, the decision was made to extend the existing ranch plan into the back yard, adding a new 2-car garage below the new space - for a new total of 2,520sf. With a previous addition of a 1-car garage and a small kitchen removed, a large addition was added for Master Bedroom Suite, a 4th bedroom, hall bath, and a completely remodeled living, dining and new Kitchen, open to large new Family Room. The new lower level includes the new Garage and Mudroom. The existing fireplace and chimney remain - with beautifully exposed brick. The homeowners love contemporary design, and finished the home with a gorgeous mix of color, pattern and materials.
The project was completed in 2011. Unfortunately, 2 years later, they suffered a massive house fire. The house was then rebuilt again, using the same plans and finishes as the original build, adding only a secondary laundry closet on the main level.
Marvin
New zoning codes paved the way for building an Accessory Dwelling Unit in this homes Minneapolis location. This new unit allows for independent multi-generational housing within close proximity to a primary residence and serves visiting family, friends, and an occasional Airbnb renter. The strategic use of glass, partitions, and vaulted ceilings create an open and airy interior while keeping the square footage below 400 square feet. Vertical siding and awning windows create a fresh, yet complementary addition.
Christopher Strom was recognized in the “Best Contemporary” category in Marvin Architects Challenge 2017. The judges admired the simple addition that is reminiscent of the traditional red barn, yet uses strategic volume and glass to create a dramatic contemporary living space.

After knocking down walls to open up the space and adding skylights, a bright, airy kitchen with abundant natural light was created. The lighting, counter stools and soapstone countertops give the room an urban chic, semi-industrial feel but the warmth of the wooden beams and the wood flooring make sure that the space is not cold. A secondary, smaller island was put on wheels in order to have a movable and highly functional prep space.
C.M. Chartier Contracting
We used the Euro Cabinet Line, which is a frameless construction, & dovetail drawer construction, with a melamine interior. The customer wanted clean lines in their kitchen, so we did a solid panel MDF door with matching drawer fronts.
For colors we did a custom color by Benjamin Moore called Hale Navy and White Lacquer on the upper cabinets.
The customer used Calico White Quartz for the counter tops.

Details: Carrara marble window sills, with their bluish-gray veining, harmonize with the blue tile and provide a finishing touch to the remodel.
