Built by Pettit & Sevitt in the 1970s, this architecturally designed split-level home needed a refresh. Studio Black Interiors worked with builders, REP building, to transform the interior of this home with the aim of creating a space that was light filled and open plan with a seamless connection to the outdoors. The client’s love of rich navy was incorporated into all the joinery. Fifty years on, it is joyous to view this home which has grown into its bushland suburb and become almost organic in referencing the surrounding landscape. Renovation by REP Building. Our client was undertaking a major renovation and extension of their large Edwardian home and wanted to create a Hamptons style kitchen, with a specific emphasis on catering for their large family and the need to be able to provide a large entertaining area for both family gatherings and as a senior executive of a major company the need to entertain guests at home. It was a real delight to have such an expansive space to work with to design this kitchen and walk-in-pantry and clients who trusted us implicitly to bring their vision to life. The design features a face-frame construction with shaker style doors made in solid English Oak and then finished in two-pack satin paint. The open grain of the oak timber, which lifts through the paint, adds a textural and visual element to the doors and panels. The kitchen is topped beautifully with natural 'Super White' granite, 4 slabs of which were required for the massive 5.7m long and 1.3m wide island bench to achieve the best grain match possible throughout the whole length of the island. The integrated Sub Zero fridge and 1500mm wide Wolf stove sit perfectly within the Hamptons style and offer a true chef's experience in the home. A pot filler over the stove offers practicality and convenience and adds to the Hamptons style along with the beautiful fireclay sink and bridge tapware. A clever wet bar was incorporated into the far end of the kitchen leading out to the pool with a built in fridge drawer and a coffee station. The walk-in pantry, which extends almost the entire length behind the kitchen, adds a secondary preparation space and unparalleled storage space for all of the kitchen gadgets, cookware and serving ware a keen home cook and avid entertainer requires. Our client's galley kitchen lacked practical storage with an outdated layout that didn’t flow. They approached Matter to maximise the available storage with a more cohesive layout to suit their evolving needs in the years ahead. They allowed near free reign over design and materials, with one simple request that each are equally contemporary and functional. Our design solution combines hard-wearing Blackbutt plywood and grey Forescolor MDF for the door and drawer fronts with laminate-face plywood carcasses. As the MDF has a full colour core, we added a new handle design that cut into the face on a taper, enabling a larger finger-pull and play of light on the surface. Solid Blackbutt handles and vertical partitions are a contemporary take on traditional frame and panel doors. For a touch of indulgence, we added beautifully dramatic Faustina quartzite bench tops and splashbacks from Artedomus. All lower cupboards were replaced with drawers featuring adjustable partitions and a large pull-out Kesseböhmer pantry to ensure food is easily accessed. The oven and microwave were moved next to the stove area and raised for better accessibility. A bench top appliance nook hides away the kettle and toaster behind a custom-made Blackbutt tambour door. We also replaced a section of overhead cupboards with slatted shelving and a mirrored backing that reflects natural light to open up the tight space. Lastly, we added a pull-up bench at the end of the galley to allow our client all the surface area they need to continue to cook meals with complete ease.

Relocating to Portland, Oregon from California, this young family immediately hired Amy to redesign their newly purchased home to better fit their needs. The project included updating the kitchen, hall bath, and adding an en suite to their master bedroom. Removing a wall between the kitchen and dining allowed for additional counter space and storage along with improved traffic flow and increased natural light to the heart of the home. This galley style kitchen is focused on efficiency and functionality through custom cabinets with a pantry boasting drawer storage topped with quartz slab for durability, pull-out storage accessories throughout, deep drawers, and a quartz topped coffee bar/ buffet facing the dining area. The master bath and hall bath were born out of a single bath and a closet. While modest in size, the bathrooms are filled with functionality and colorful design elements. Durable hex shaped porcelain tiles compliment the blue vanities topped with white quartz countertops. The shower and tub are both tiled in handmade ceramic tiles, bringing much needed texture and movement of light to the space. The hall bath is outfitted with a toe-kick pull-out step for the family’s youngest member!

We designed and built this new kitchen as part of a main floor renovation of this 1891 rowhouse. The kitchen and main floor open plan reflect the homeowner’s contemporary taste, but with a nod to the historic aspect of the home. The clients were especially delighted with our success in achieving a “light and airy” feel. The client wanted to open up the entire floor to increase the amount of natural light that flowed into the main floor of this rowhouse. He also wanted a visual connection from the front entry to the back door. The new kitchen reflects his contemporary style. We flipped the original kitchen and dining room, and removed the walls to make the kitchen central to the floor plan. Moving the original kitchen from the back room to a central location in the floorplan allowed us to: • Place all the storage and appliances on a party wall where no windows would be obscured. • Increase the size of the kitchen and provide better flow for entertaining • Increase natural light by doubling the size of the back window and installing two new windows. A new full-light rear door also allows natural light to flow into the space. HDBros

1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle! You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe you’re planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. A corner cabinet can be a smart storage solution if you want to keep the look clean and simple.

3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste. Consider what your cooking style is for a start - Italy is known for its cuisine, so italian kitchen designs are generally popular. Also consider ergonomics - depending on how much time you spend in your kitchen, the height of your counters can make a big difference to your overall health. You also want to consider colour and finishes of cabinets, countertops and splashbacks. Which colour do you want your cupboards to be? Simple, timeless white or rather making a statement in black?
