Main Line Kitchen Design is a unique business model! We are a group of skilled Kitchen Designers each with many years of experience planning kitchens around the Delaware Valley. And we are cabinet dealers for 8 nationally distributed cabinet lines much like traditional showrooms. Appointment Information Unlike full showrooms open to the general public, Main Line Kitchen Design works only by appointment. Appointments can be scheduled days, nights, and weekends either in your home or in our office and selection center. During office appointments we display clients kitchens on a flat screen TV and help them look through 100’s of sample doorstyles, almost a thousand sample finish blocks and sample kitchen cabinets. During home visits we can bring samples, take measurements, and make design changes on laptops showing you what your kitchen can look like in the very room being renovated. This is more convenient for our customers and it eliminates the expense of staffing and maintaining a larger space that is open to walk in traffic. We pass the significant savings on to our customers and so we sell cabinetry for less than other dealers, even home centers like Lowes and The Home Depot. We believe that since a web site like Houzz.com has over half a million kitchen photos, any advantage to going to a full kitchen showroom with full kitchen displays has been lost. Almost no customer today will ever get to see a display kitchen in their door style and finish because there are just too many possibilities. And the design of each kitchen is unique anyway. Our design process allows us to spend more time working on our customer’s designs. This is what we enjoy most about our business and it is what makes the difference between an average and a great kitchen design

Traditional Home’s Before & After Kitchen

This “before” Manhattan kitchen was featured in Traditional Home in 1992 having traditional cherry cabinets and polished-brass hardware. Twenty-three years later it was featured again, having been redesigned by Bilotta designer RitaLuisa Garces, this time as a less ornate space, a more streamlined, cleaner look that is popular today. Rita reconfigured the kitchen using the same space but with a more practical flow and added light. The new “after” kitchen features recessed panel Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry in a blue finish with materials that have reflective qualities. These materials consist of glass mosaic tile backsplash from Artistic Tile, a Bridge faucet in polished nickel from Barber Wilsons & Co, Franke stainless-steel sink, porcelain floor tiles with a bronze glaze and polished blue granite countertops. When the kitchen was reconfigured they moved the eating niche and added a tinted mirror backsplash to reflect the light as well. The counter tops are a group 5 granite to get a more unique pattern and the backsplash is a dark glass custom sheet. The floors are travertine that flows from indoor to the custom outdoor bar out back. The pantry door is a barn door that is stain matched to blend with the island. Wood beams warm the space and accentuate the height of the kitchen and dining area. The appliances are by Thermador and the faucets, hardware and lighting fixtures are matte brass. The dining area has a large wood table and linen chairs with brass legs.

We bumped out the kitchen and put in a wall of windows to the expansive view. We designed a wall to both create an entry nook, and house the refrigerator and upper cabinets. A drywall enclosure was designed to give the range balance and become the focal point of the kitchen. The island was custom-wrapped in stainless steel and a cantilevered oval high eating bar was installed to again take advantage of views. We specified layers of fun lighting.

1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle! You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe you’re planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. A corner cabinet can be a smart storage solution if you want to keep the look clean and simple.

3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste. Consider what your cooking style is for a start - Italy is known for its cuisine, so italian kitchen designs are generally popular. Also consider ergonomics - depending on how much time you spend in your kitchen, the height of your counters can make a big difference to your overall health. You also want to consider colour and finishes of cabinets, countertops and splashbacks. Which colour do you want your cupboards to be? Simple, timeless white or rather making a statement in black?
