A retro 1950’s kitchen featuring green custom colored cabinets with glass door mounts, under cabinet lighting, pull-out drawers, and Lazy Susans. To contrast with the green we added in red window treatments, a toaster oven, and other small red polka dot accessories. A few final touches we made include a retro fridge, retro oven, retro dishwasher, an apron sink, light quartz countertops, a white subway tile backsplash, and retro tile flooring. Home located in Humboldt Park Chicago. Designed by Chi Renovation & Design who also serve the Chicagoland area and it's surrounding suburbs, with an emphasis on the North Side and North Shore. This rustic cabin is located on the beautiful Lake Martin in Alexander City, Alabama. It was constructed in the 1950's by Roy Latimer. The cabin was one of the first 3 to be built on the lake and offers amazing views overlooking one of the largest lakes in Alabama. The cabin's latest renovation was to the quaint little kitchen. The new tall cabinets with an elegant green play off the colors of the heart pine walls and ceiling. If you could only see the view from this kitchen window!

Beverage Center near Kitchen for Entertaining Fun

Included in the renovation was a new kitchen with separate beverage area for entertaining. This 1961 Cape Cod was well-sited on a beautiful acre of land in a Washington, DC suburb. The new homeowners loved the land and neighborhood and knew the house could be improved. Inside, the owners wanted to achieve a feeling of warmth and comfort. The family does a lot of casual entertaining and they wanted to achieve lots of open spaces that flowed well, one into another. So, circulation on the main living level was important. They wanted to use lots of natural materials, like reclaimed wood floors, stone, and granite. In addition, they wanted the house to be filled with light, using lots of large windows where possible. When all was said and done, the homeowners got a home they love on the land they cherish. The kitchen is separated from the family room by a two-sided, stone, fireplace. The after space now houses the beverage center, a powder room (behind the cabinetry wall) and a hallway transition space from the kitchen to the sunroom. This project was truly satisfying and the homeowners LOVE their new residence.

Completed on a small budget, this hard working kitchen refused to compromise on style. The upper and lower perimeter cabinets, sink and countertops are all from IKEA. The vintage schoolhouse pendant lights over the island were an eBay score, and the pendant over the sink is from Restoration Hardware. The BAKERY letters were made custom, and the vintage metal bar stools were an antique store find, as were many of the accessories used in this space. Oh, and in case you were wondering, that refrigerator was a DIY project compiled of nothing more than a circa 1970 fridge, beadboard, moulding, and some fencing hardware found at a local hardware store.

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage?
