Atherton Avenue House
Atherton Avenue House
Mark English Architects, AIAMark English Architects, AIA
The Atherton House is a family compound for a professional couple in the tech industry, and their two teenage children. After living in Singapore, then Hong Kong, and building homes there, they looked forward to continuing their search for a new place to start a life and set down roots. The site is located on Atherton Avenue on a flat, 1 acre lot. The neighboring lots are of a similar size, and are filled with mature planting and gardens. The brief on this site was to create a house that would comfortably accommodate the busy lives of each of the family members, as well as provide opportunities for wonder and awe. Views on the site are internal. Our goal was to create an indoor- outdoor home that embraced the benign California climate. The building was conceived as a classic “H” plan with two wings attached by a double height entertaining space. The “H” shape allows for alcoves of the yard to be embraced by the mass of the building, creating different types of exterior space. The two wings of the home provide some sense of enclosure and privacy along the side property lines. The south wing contains three bedroom suites at the second level, as well as laundry. At the first level there is a guest suite facing east, powder room and a Library facing west. The north wing is entirely given over to the Primary suite at the top level, including the main bedroom, dressing and bathroom. The bedroom opens out to a roof terrace to the west, overlooking a pool and courtyard below. At the ground floor, the north wing contains the family room, kitchen and dining room. The family room and dining room each have pocketing sliding glass doors that dissolve the boundary between inside and outside. Connecting the wings is a double high living space meant to be comfortable, delightful and awe-inspiring. A custom fabricated two story circular stair of steel and glass connects the upper level to the main level, and down to the basement “lounge” below. An acrylic and steel bridge begins near one end of the stair landing and flies 40 feet to the children’s bedroom wing. People going about their day moving through the stair and bridge become both observed and observer. The front (EAST) wall is the all important receiving place for guests and family alike. There the interplay between yin and yang, weathering steel and the mature olive tree, empower the entrance. Most other materials are white and pure. The mechanical systems are efficiently combined hydronic heating and cooling, with no forced air required.

This project was not only full of many bathrooms but also many different aesthetics. The goals were fourfold, create a new master suite, update the basement bath, add a new powder bath and my favorite, make them all completely different aesthetics. Primary Bath-This was originally a small 60SF full bath sandwiched in between closets and walls of built-in cabinetry that blossomed into a 130SF, five-piece primary suite. This room was to be focused on a transitional aesthetic that would be adorned with Calcutta gold marble, gold fixtures and matte black geometric tile arrangements. Powder Bath-A new addition to the home leans more on the traditional side of the transitional movement using moody blues and greens accented with brass. A fun play was the asymmetry of the 3-light sconce brings the aesthetic more to the modern side of transitional. My favorite element in the space, however, is the green, pink black and white deco tile on the floor whose colors are reflected in the details of the Australian wallpaper. Hall Bath-Looking to touch on the home's 70's roots, we went for a mid-mod fresh update. Black Calcutta floors, linear-stacked porcelain tile, mixed woods and strong black and white accents. The green tile may be the star but the matte white ribbed tiles in the shower and behind the vanity are the true unsung heroes.

This expansive elegant marble master bathroom is classic and rates highly on our list of favorite projects. Marble is always a good choice as it is a timeless look and adds to the value of your home. Marble can be one of the higher priced materials and also requires regular maintenance however marble bathrooms are gorgeous and allow flexibility and a vast amount of possibilities for application. This marble inspired bathroom was achieved by mixing real marble with porcelain tile that mimics the look of marble. The result is breath taking, low maintenance and a fraction of the cost! This master bath was expansive with over 300 square feet of usable space and a beautiful high ceiling. Sherry balanced out the room by creating a large double vanity designed with Waypoint cabinetry in painted linen. The higher elevation of the large tower between the vanities make it appear like a customized piece of furniture and the 4 sconces directly mounted to the mirrors are a nice detail that elevate the piece. The Ranier quartz countertops and Mayfair Volakas Giorgio Porcelain tile provide the subtle contrast of grey veining throughout the room. A 66” Draque tub with floor mounted waterfall faucet is beautifully surrounded with the same Volakes Giorgio tile. It is the perfect spot for our client to relax and take a load off while being showered by the light of the unique Alexandria Abstract Chandelier hanging above the tub. When designing the shower enclosure, Sherry blended different types of tile and tile sizes to create interest and movement. Cornice Perla Marble pieces create a beautiful transition between the glossy subway and the marble patterned tile. A bench for sitting is topped off with the same Ranier quartz used for the countertops and was added for the comfort of our client while using the Kohler handshower with extended hose. Bianco Perla basketweave marble are located in the niche and floor which add a different design component for interest. Our client opted to have her half bath remodeled as well. Many of the same components that we used in the master bathroom were used to make this other wise small space appear larger. Overall, we can’t say enough about how happy we were with the end result of this project. We were even happier to know that our client was over the moon about her dream master bathroom. Are you dreaming about your master bathroom and what possibilities we could accomplish in a marble look for you? We would love to hear from you, the options are amazing! .

The master bath cabinet layout was inspired by the high ceilings and the functionality of a master bath. Having a large tower added extra storage and added to the eloquent space with its size. The quartz countertops created a clean look in the dark gray. The large shower tiles added texture with the veining. The shower niches were a great spot to add more character and whimsy to the white and gray shower.

This master bathroom was partially an old hall bath that was able to be enlarged due to a whole home addition. The homeowners needed a space to spread out and relax after a long day of working on other people's homes (yes - they do what we do!) A spacious floor plan, large tub, over-sized walk in shower, a smart commode, and customized enlarged vanity did the trick! The cabinets are from WW Woods Shiloh inset, in their furniture collection. Maple with a Naval paint color make a bold pop of color in the space. Robern cabinets double as storage and mirrors at each vanity sink. The master closet is fully customized and outfitted with cabinetry from California Closets. The tile is all a Calacatta Gold Marble - herringbone mosaic on the floor and a subway in the shower. Golden and brass tones in the plumbing bring warmth to the space. The vanity faucets, shower items, tub filler, and accessories are from Watermark. The commode is "smart" and from Toto.

Client wanted to update her Bathroom, change the Tub to a Stall Shower, make it a little Bigger & Improve much needed organized Storage Space. I am Proud to Announce, that this jewel of a small apartment co-op bath just: "Won my Fifth National Award!" Many of my Winning Awards for my "State of the Art Bathrooms", most of them were huge. It is far harder to Create a Beautiful Bathroom that is 5' x 6" and not make it look cluttered, where the client can retreat, from their stress of the day. Even though small, this bath has many of the features of my large bathrooms. The judges commented, that they couldn't believe how many things, I had put in this bath & it wasn't cluttered at all. Every inch counts! Firstly, the heavy cast iron tub was probably 60-70 years old. When we removed it, the back wall collapsed as they obviously used inferior products back then, behind the tile, which rotted. Then we removed the old vanity & found a heater under it, which had to be removed to accomodate the wall hung vanity. To make matters worse , when you sat on the commode your knees practically hit the opposite wall & the ceiling was only 7' instead of 8' high which made you feel very claustrophobic. The first thing we did, was move the wall across from the vanity back 1' taking the space from the linen closet and Master Bedroom Closet, which made all the difference in the world. Now we were able to move the bath door back, so you had more room on the commode and we were able to put a larger low rise commode & a wall to block it from the foyer. It the client had agreed, I would have mirrored the ceiling to give the illusion of a much taller & larger space! We deliberately selected soft light colors, recessed cabinets to increase the much needed storage for her bathroom items. She actually has 25+ times the storage space, organized with the 2 draws in the wall hung vanity, mirrored inside/out recessed medicine & storage cabinet, with de-foggers, GFI plugs, & even a soft night light that emanates from an opening at the bottom of the medicine cabinet, that eliminates you turning on a bright light and waking you up, in the middle of the night! Each individual detailed photos will give you additional details.
