We had renovated others areas of this home and enjoyed designing and renovating this fun black and white "kids" bath. With a whimsical aesthetic we wanted to do something fun and creative with black and white tile and laid out this zig zag pattern that our tile setters followed well. We used black tile to finish the look for base around the room and a black pencil mold to finish the top. By determining the height of the vanity and the size of the mirror, we were able to determine the best height to lay the tile up the walls. A black toilet anchors the toilet niche and the floating black vanity is gorgeous with the pop of white quartz top and sink and a black faucet make for a gorgeous aesthetic. Black and Gold sconces mounted on the side walls finish this fun room for the "kid" in all of us.

Mark and Cindy wanted to update the main level of their home but weren’t sure what their “style” was and where to start. They thought their taste was traditional rustic based on elements already present in the home. They love to entertain and drink wine, and wanted furnishings that would be durable and provide ample seating. The project scope included replacing flooring throughout, updating the fireplace, new furnishings in the living room and foyer, new lighting for the living room and eating area, new paint and window treatments, updating the powder room but keeping the vanity cabinet, updating the stairs in the foyer and accessorizing all rooms. It didn’t take long after working with these clients to discover they were drawn to bolder, more contemporary looks! After selecting this beautiful stain for the wood flooring, we extended the flooring into the living room to create more of an open feel. The stairs have a new handrail, modern balusters and a carpet runner with a subtle but striking pattern. A bench seat and new furnishings added a welcoming touch of glam. A wall of bold geometric tile added the wow factor to the powder room, completed with a contemporary mirror and lighting, sink and faucet, accessories and art. The black ceiling added to the dramatic effect. In the living room two comfy leather sofas surround a large ottoman and modern rug to ground the space, with a black and gold chandelier added to the room to uplift the ambience. New tile fireplace surround, black and gold granite hearth and white mantel create a bold focal point, with artwork and other furnishings to tie in the colors and create a cozy but contemporary room they love to lounge in. For this kitchen and bath remodel in San Francisco's Cole Valley, our client wanted us to open the kitchen up to the living room and create a new modern feel for all of the remodeled areas. Opening the kitchen to the living area provided a structural challenge as the wall we had to remove was load-bearing and there was a separately owned condo on the floor below. Working closely with a structural engineer, we created a strategy to carry the weight to the exterior walls of the building. In order to do this we had to tear off the entire roof and rebuild it with new structural joists which could span from property line to property line. To achieve a dramatic daylighting effect, we created a slot skylight over the back wall of the kitchen with the beams running through the skylight. Cerulean blue, back-painted glass for the backsplash and a thick waterfall edge for the island add more distinctive touches to this kitchen design. In the master bath we created a sinuous counter edge which tracks its way to the floor to create a curb for the shower. Green tile imported from Morocco adds a pop of color in the shower and a custom built indirect LED lighting cove creates a glow of light around the mirror. Photography by Christopher Stark.

How do I plan the layout of my powder room?

If you're building from scratch, an architect may be the best person to ask. There are three main objects to consider when planning the layout of your contemporary powder room: the door, toilet and sink. Pocket, sliding or folding doors will give you more options for toilet and sink placement, while wall-mounted toilets will help save you a few inches of floor space, and make the room feel more spacious. To ensure ease of use, make sure the toilet has at least 38 centimetres of unobstructed space on either side, and 61 centimetres at the front. Powder rooms are primarily a place to use the toilet and quickly wash your hands, so unless you have the square meterage, you don’t need a full-blown vanity. Look for compact options, like a pedestal or wall-mounted sink instead.

What materials should I use in my powder room?

There’s not much space to work with when designing a contemporary powder room, so keep your design fairly simple. Otherwise, too many different patterns and textures will quickly overwhelm the space. To avoid a disjointed design, opt for one statement piece or element, such as a fun splashback, benchtop or vanity, and choose subtle materials like stone, marble or granite for everything else. If you fear you haven’t created enough visual interest, fill the void with bathroom accessories such as hand towels and soap dispensers. High-quality bathroom fixtures – including everything from your toilet roll holder to faucet – with matching lines and style, will make a big difference in a such a small space, so if you have the budget, splurge a little!
