Once upon a time this kitchen had a galley style layout with a wall separating it from the dining room. Removing the wall allowed us to introduce a large 10 foot kitchen island that houses the sink, dishwasher, garbage disposal, additional storage and an eat-at counter. But in order to create such a functional island, we had to take room from the dining space. Keeping a comfortable flow around the island meant pushing the table closer to the exterior wall and introducing a bench.
