Eleven by Twenty Three

An awkward proportion for a kitchen. At eleven feet wide an island is not usually possible. However, the use of vanity depth cabinets for the island and shallow demi-tall units behind, allowed this design to work very well. The length of the room is mitigated by the use of a “bump out” at the sink and free-standing furniture pieces. The opening into the family room has been resized to suit the centre line of the table. Rich and warm maple cabinets with black glaze are complemented by ebonized and rubbed-through cabinets for the island and shallow pantries. Granite countertops are contrasted by an irregular brick travertine backsplash and the window trim has been modified to suit this tile work.
