These 1990's white cabinets are very high end but the y needed some new granite and a switch in the base color to a putty colored cream with a taupe glaze detailing to tie them in with the new cream and brown granite (the old granite not pictured here was pink, white and gray). The entire palate came from the already existing back splash.

This kitchen has one of the largest, most dynamite islands that we have seen in our 30 years of design. The doubled-up, circular, attached table piece of granite was a work of art. It helped create a place for the family to gather and have meals, since the kitchen table was eliminated. The opposite wall on this kitchen was a real work horse, housing a bar with glass cabinetry and a wine cooler, and a desk to organize mail and bills. This kitchen included a lot of new appliances including a steam and convection oven, warming drawer, and Sub Zero large refrigerator/freezer with custom paneling. The Dura Supreme cabinetry was an Antique White paint with a Espresso Glazed finish around the perimeter. The island complimented the perimeter in a rich Chestnut Cherry finish. The combination of the two woods and finishes created a stunning new transformation of this space.

Every time you look at this remarkable kitchen you will find a new feature tucked away in this entertainer's dream kitchen. The statement piece is the 48" GE Monogram professional dual fuel range with complementary 54" stainless steel hood by Vent-a-Hood. On the perimeter you will find the Lakeview door by Plain & Fancy cabinetry in maple wood. It is an inset door that we had made with an inner bead. The finish is called Morning Shadow, which is paint/glaze combination with a light brushstroke. Oil rubbed bronze exposed finial hinges really work well keeping with the craftsman theme. The stacked upper cabinets have been fitted with vertical lifting mechanisms and oil rubbed bronze latch hardware. On the left we created a grand breakfast bar complete with 60" x 60" piano hinged doors that open completely, exposing shelving and appliances. Down below you will find a Scotsman nugget ice maker and U-Line 15" wine storage unit. The island is a custom door, inset with an inner bead. The customer opted for knotty alder wood with a low sheen cocoa stain. The farmhouse sink is the Kohler Strive 36" with Smart Divide. We created a drop down table on the rear of the island using a custom paint to match the beams above. This painted finish was then distressed with heavy brush mark crackling by Plain & Fancy. For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle! You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe you’re planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. A corner cabinet can be a smart storage solution if you want to keep the look clean and simple.

3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste. Consider what your cooking style is for a start - Italy is known for its cuisine, so italian kitchen designs are generally popular. Also consider ergonomics - depending on how much time you spend in your kitchen, the height of your counters can make a big difference to your overall health. You also want to consider colour and finishes of cabinets, countertops and splashbacks. Which colour do you want your cupboards to be? Simple, timeless white or rather making a statement in black? Maybe rather a rustic wood? Also consider the colour of your floor - if you have dark floors, you may want to keep cabinets lighter.
