This cute backyard patio was renovated to provide an outdoor seating area with a firepit by Benintoshape, bar seating for entertaining and a cozy dining area adjacent to the kitchen. Barbara designed perennials and bulbs to be added to the existing shade garden spaces and new plantings were incorporated to provide more seasonal color and interest in the rose garden. New shade tolerant shrubs and groundcovers were added under a large Norway Maple tree that cast considerable shade in the backyard. A new stepping stone path provided access to the nearby sunny lawn and playscape in the side yard. The back and side yards were enclosed with a picket fence to keep the pets and children safe. Comfortable lounge furniture by Janus et Cie and pillows by Elaine Smith were placed in the renovated patio space. The dining area was covered with a Tuuci cantilever umbrella for additional shade in the afternoon.

Eight rectangular beds surrounded a sundial in pairs with four at either end of the sundial and grass paths between them. There were some poppies, lupins and verbena bonariensis and a couple of cistus and lavenders to work with. We lifted and divided lots of the existing plants and re-organiseed the beds, adding more lupins, nepeta, roses, poppies and grasses. Because we had reused many existing plants, this planting looked amazing the first summer after planting in late autumn.
Project Green Thumb
The brief here was to transform this garden into a calming, sophisticated oasis with a grey, purple and white colour pallet.
With all this in mind we chose a lovely combination of small shrubs and perennial plants to give colour all year round. A new real turf lawn was laid, the fence painted in slate greyand all paving slabs jet washed. Transformed!

Karl Harrison Landscapes Ltd
Karl put together a garden design that met all their wants and needs. Removing the massive storage unit gave back over half of the garden space. This left behind a concrete pad that made a perfect base to install the no maintenance Trex composite decking. Karl is a TrexPro making this Trex Deck warrantied for 25 years. Following the low maintenance theme, Karl chose to use Namgrass artificial lawn around the decking. This grass even has a 10mm foam layer underneath to make it really comfy underfoot.

What is more traditional (or more welcoming) than roses blooming in front of a Cape Cod home? Here is one I transplanted long ago from the famous Webster Rose Garden (closed 1970), in Quissett, MA. I cared for this home for many years, and am glad to see this 100 year old rose still thriving for the current owners! No idea what this old variety was called, but modern breeding has given us a choice of many hardy roses grown on their own root stock. Check your local nursery, plant in sun, provide well drained soil (no problem on sandy Cape Cod).

Elfin thyme softens a stepping stone path. Penstemon 'Midnight' flowers purple in the foreground, hedge of Garrya elliptica 'Evie' (Coast Silktassel) provides a dark green backdrop along the fence. The end of season flowers are still hanging on the rosy buckwheat in the background, visible against the tall flowers spikes of Muhlenbergia rigens (Deer Grass.) Dark coral bells and pink carpet roses peek through on the right. Robyn Basso
