A professional artist wanted to transform the back garden of their 70s style East London home into a tropical paradise. Our eclectic client needed a garden and outdoor studio to complement their free-spirited nature and cater to their artistic and entertaining requirements. With a particular affinity for tropical vegetation from worldly travels, our client wanted their garden to evoke past explorations and spark the imagination. We transformed the conventional back garden lawn into a lush oasis with unique architectural elements.

All built with dry stone brief was to build without the use of concrete. Including 5metre high retaining walls, floating steps, slate edged paths and bee hive terrace. Hammer finished flat slate coping.

Whyte Gardens

This small front yard design focused around the entrance of the house and the transition to the door. A series of steps were created at different levels using travertine paving disguising the sharp elevation and the large number of steps required for the site. In conjunction the linear rendered walls and the planting complimented the horizontal lines of the house. The planting created soft boundaries between the street and the house adding privacy with a row of Magnolia ‘little gems’.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
