The owners of this contemporary home love the woods that surround their property. They wanted that feeling to embrace their home, while keeping the sight lines open. A contemporary linear paver was chosen to echo the board-formed concrete wall at the entrance. A mix of native and woodland plants line the chip seal driveway. In a sunny spot in the front, a pollinator garden of native flowering plants greets the owners as they park their car. A much-loved Dogwood tree was framed with ferns and carex. Hellebores and spring bulbs peak through in the spring, enlightening the entrance garden.

A Seattle couple needed to take advantage of our amazing summer weather and asked for a way to watch movies outside. We were up to the challenge, designing a custom concrete bench that by day serves as built-in seating and transforms at night into a perfect spot to catch a flick on the fly! Other touches include modern planting and steel planters to match the contemporary feel of the home. Photos by Miranda Estes Photography

This garden was designed to celebrate panoramic views of the San Gabriel mountains. Horizontal bands of slate tile from the interior of the mid-century home wrap around the house’s perimeter and extend to the rear pool area, inviting the family outdoors. With a pool framed by mature trees, a sunken seating area, fruit trees, and a modest lawn for a young family, the landscape provides a wide range of opportunities for play, entertaining and relaxation. The transformation of a manicured lawn to wildflower meadow creates a harmonious connection with the surrounding countryside, and a dramatic entry arrival.

Dramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.
