This active family with two young boys wanted a place to grow food, lounge in the front yard with friends and have blooms upon blooms of midwestern flowers to enjoy. Custom tuteurs, vegetable beds and benches frame the center of the garden, surrounded by low maintenance flowering shrubs, trees and perennials. Evergreen grasses form the understory of the borders. Raised vegetable garden and paths we designed and installed for a client who wanted to do some gardening.

Vegetable and flower garden with Olla irrigation system. Water seeps through the walls of unglazed 'Olla', these vessels can be used to irrigate plants. The Olla is buried in the ground next to the roots of the plant to be irrigated. The Olla is filled with water, which gradually seeps into the soil to water the roots of the plant. It is an efficient method, since no water is lost to evaporation or run-off.

This is a very small backyard which the owners wanted to be able to grow and harvest a wide variety of fruits and veggies. Watering tanks helped increase the area in which food could be grown. The backyard patio has several areas for seating and a small firepit. Fruit trees and fruiting vines are set along fences and arbors to add to the variety of food.

The rear garden now has a level lawn area for a young family to play in. New trees and shrubs have been planted for year round interest and future screening. The vegetable-herb garden in raised galvanized troughs provides hours of fun for the young children.
