We designed different areas to the gardens, each evoking a different ambiance. The gardens include a new heated pool and a sunken spa, with stunning views over the sun-lit fields beyond.

Refined Outdoor Living...our clients were looking to upgrade their outdoor spaces. The existing pool just wasn't the great space they thought it should have been. But bringing it together was harder than it looked. Destination spaces was one idea for gathering family and friends. Smores, coffee and night caps around the firepit. Cozy nights in front of the fireplace was a must & with a shade structure attached, cooling off was easy. Seating areas for lounge chairs, chaises around the pool made entertaining easy. 3 fountain jets creates that just right sound and a fun place for swimming under! The icing on the cake was the perimeter landscape & lighting. Memories will be created for years to come. Cozy, yet festive is always the best of both worlds!

The classic Spanish architecture of the house needed a memorable courtyard to welcome visitors and an extra dose of curb appeal. We designed an exquisite wrought iron front gate as the first point of entry with a Moorish star fountain just beyond that beckons you to enter. A creamy white sandstone creates an ethereal floor with a subtle but striking border detail around the fountain. Original Malibu-style tile was designed specifically for the fountain and custom colors complete this elegant and lovely water feature. The soft sound of brimming water is a soothing balm in a busy city day.

this small city back yard is designed for the adults to relax on the elevated bluestone terrace at the firepit and watch the kids play on the lawn. The yard used to be steeply sloped, so I created terracing to make the yard more usable. The yard highlights the existing antique San Francisco cobblestone wall that bounds the back of the yard. Wisteria is trained on the wood fence, and Green Tower Boxwoods on both sides of the yard create a framework. The edges are kept narrow and simple, to maximize the turf area and be tough enough to withstand the occasional soccer ball. The Fire pit is built around a ready-made contractor's kit from American Fyre Designs, to which I added reclaimed San Francisco Cobble around the outside. The Fire pit is bisected by the low retaining wall, and is low foot/table height on the patio side and a taller feature element on the lawn side which has a narrative with the old existing stone wall at the back.

The owners of this Gilbert, AZ house, wanted an area for their dogs to enjoy. The bordered area of artificial turf is large enough for even a big dog. It is bordered with brick and surrounded by decorative gravel. This shows that the turf is separate and yet still part of the main back yard. The rectangular shape is broken up somewhat by the gently curving pathway on the left-hand side, leading to a seating and entertainment area.

How to Create a Garden for Your Home

Depending on which style you’re going for, be sure to know what makes a garden and if it’s appropriate for your climate. You may want to consider adding a deck or other landscaping features, but the plants you choose will mostly dictate your style and what kind of ongoing maintenance is required. Don’t worry if your backyard isn’t very spacious - there are many plants that can thrive even in a small space and allow you to turn your space into a little paradise of your own, regardless of size.

Decide which plants to use

The greenery you choose is critical to your look. For example, if you’re trying to create a tropical garden palm trees and bamboo are your go-to options. Other popular options are golden cane palm trees and fern for ground cover. From there you can add some colour with bright flowers like frangipani, hibiscus or bromeliads. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
