Thayer Hopkins ArchitectsLocated in a bucolic area of Marin County, just outside of San Rafael, the original ranch residence had been inconsistently remodeled over the years. The interior spaces had eight foot ceilings and were lifted in key areas of the house to expand the spaciousness and emit light. New fenestration and full height glass doors allow for wonderful light and improved connection to the outdoors. While keeping much of the existing structure the home was completely remodeled to expand the exterior living space with new decks, trellises, an outdoor kitchen and fireplace.
Tracey Parker Landscape Design LtdThis family garden was redesigned to gives a sense of space for both adults and children at the same time the clients were extending their home. The view of the garden was enhanced by an oversized picture window from the kitchen onto the garden.
This informed the design of the iroko pergola which has a BBQ area to catch the evening sun. The wood was stained to match the picture window allowing continuity between the house and garden. Existing roses were relocated to climb the uprights and a Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Charles Lamont’ was planted immediately outside the window to give floral impact during the winter months which it did beautifully in its first year.
The Kiwi clients desired a lot of evergreen structure which helped to define areas. Designboard ‘Greenwich’ was specified to lighten the shaded terrace and provide a long-lasting, low-maintenance surface. The front garden was also reorganised to give it some clarity of design with a Kiwi sense of welcome.

Dig Your Garden Landscape DesignThe "Gracie Modern Arbors" (by TerraTrellis) offer eye-catching focal points. Three installed to bring interest and needed height over a long pathway ramp with grape vines. Another frames a stairway to the hillside with a flowering Passion vine. The sloped hillsides were revamped to include low-water and low-maintenance plants that include CA natives, flowing grasses, other Mediterranean plants and several succulents.

UserThis garden had an historic collection of native California and Mexican fan palms, clustered around a water-needy lawn. We removed the lawn, added a new layer of drought tolerant smaller palms, and an underplanting of mediterranean type shrubs and perennials.
Garden Structures & MoreThis project consist of a very large privacy fence system and two arbors with attached trellises.
What I think I have accomplished here is a good marriage between the garden structure and the home. The home itself in what we call its "previous life" was a real operating barn.
The attached photos that I have taken for this display show both before and after shots of the home and surrounding grounds.
Hampstead Garden Designspace for entertaining and also for their young family to play. We installed a soft white and purple planting scheme to complement the dining space and pergola. The pretty perennials provide interest throughout the year, whilst evergreen shrubs give all important permanent structure.
