This Jersey City, NJ space was the first permanent ‘home’ for the yoga studio, so it was essential for us to listen well and design a space to serve their needs for years to come. Through our design process, we helped to guide the owners through the fit-out of their new studio location that required minimal demolition and disruption to the existing space. Together, we converted a space originally used as a preschool into a welcoming, spacious yoga studio for local yogis. We created one main yoga studio by combining four small classrooms into a single larger space with new walls, while all the other program spaces (including designated areas for holistic treatments, massage, and bodywork) were accommodated into pre-existing rooms. Our team completed all demo, sheetrock, electrical, and painting aspects of the project. (The studio owners did some of the work themselves, and a different company installed the flooring and carpets.) The results speak for themselves: a peaceful, restorative space to facilitate health and healing for the studio’s community. Looking to renovate your place of business? When we first saw this basement space, it was raw, old and full of stuff, including a lot of plumbing and HVAC covering the ceiling. We were able to move a good portion of the " stuff in the ceiling" and create enough height for a great work out room, complete with mirrors and ballet bars. We kept the brick wall, from the homes original foundation and painted it to brighten up the space. It's such a thrill to design spaces where we have to learn a lot in order to get it right. The lounge area is in the center of the space and can be seen from all corners of the basement. The stacked stone ledge with barn board cap helps to balance out the barn board clad bulkhead above as well as the barn board clad archway leading into the fitness room. The expansive custom glass wall between the two spaces creates a sense of delineation while also allowing natural light to carry through. It also breaks up the use of rustic materials and brings through a clean, polished aesthetic.

A home gym can be a worthwhile investment, helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle, and saving you money in the long-run, too. All you need is a small exercise nook or a spare room that can be stocked with gym equipment. Strapped for cash? Workouts at home needn’t cost a cent; just throw down an exercise mat at the foot of your bed and voila. Home gym equipment can be large and bulky – a cross trainer, rowing machine or bench press, for example, will dominate most rooms. There are, however, alternative options for getting fit. A spare room can be transformed into a hub for aerobics, yoga, pilates, kickboxing, dancing and cardio – just add timber floorboards or rubber flooring, a mirrored wall, an exercise machine, some dumbbells, a TV and a killer sound system. This way, there’s something for the whole family. If you have the space and enjoy doing specific workouts, consider making a specialty room like a yoga studio.

How do I create a double-duty exercise room?

Make the most of your home gym by making it a dual-purpose room. You could combine your gym with an office space, playroom, guest bedroom or garage, for example. Consider which space is most practical. A treadmill in your bedroom won’t be ideal if you workout at the crack of dawn while your partner is still sleeping; likewise, you won’t want to lift weights in a garage that turns into a sweatbox in the summer because it isn’t insulated.

Again, this depends on what you enjoy doing most.
