We have designed a bespoke home gym at the end of the garden made of timber slats set in a diagonal pattern. The home gym is built under Permitted Development. I.e. without Planning Permission and in order to maximise the internal ceiling height, the floor is dropped to be level with the garden. The timber home gym has an unusual portal, forward of the main volume, to provide shades n the summer months.

The Nordic White Spruce exterior of the sauna adds a beautiful natural component to the fitness room. To make the panel-built sauna look built-in, a soffit was added above the sauna. With windows around the perimeter of the room, the partial glass front allows the bathers inside the sauna to enjoy the natural light and view outside.

We renovated the master bathroom, the kids' en suite bathroom, and the basement in this modern home in West Chester, PA. The bathrooms as very sleek and modern, with flat panel, high gloss cabinetry, white quartz counters, and gray porcelain tile floors. The basement features a main living area with a play area and a wet bar, an exercise room, a home theatre and a bathroom. These areas, too, are sleek and modern with gray laminate flooring, unique lighting, and a gray and white color palette that ties the area together. Located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, the Greenfield’s had a beautiful suburban estate. With 3 little ones running around, Mr and Mrs Greenfield found less and less time to be able to go to the local health clubs to train in between their busy schedules. So they consulted us to help build their own home gym that would cover both of their needs. Mr. Greenfield was into heavy lifting and resistance training while Mrs. Greenfield preferred functional training and cardio exercises. With that said, we provided them with the Universal Trainer, 5-100lb Dumbbell Set, Linx Rack Functional Training System and they added their own Peloton Bike.

This way, there’s something for the whole family. If you have the space and enjoy doing specific workouts, consider making a specialty room like a yoga studio.

How do I create a double-duty exercise room?

Make the most of your home gym by making it a dual-purpose room. You could combine your gym with an office space, playroom, guest bedroom or garage, for example. Consider which space is most practical. A treadmill in your bedroom won’t be ideal if you workout at the crack of dawn while your partner is still sleeping; likewise, you won’t want to lift weights in a garage that turns into a sweatbox in the summer because it isn’t insulated.

Again, this depends on what you enjoy doing most. Yoga mats, dumbbells and punching bags are popular purchases, or you could splurge on big-ticket items like a treadmill or multi-functional home gym system.
