Old meets new in our antique brass finish. It gives the staircase a grown-up twist and this particular hue is sought-after by interior designers seeking an ‘industrial’ look with a warm ambience. This beautiful interpretation of Opus suits a range of hallways and entrances in traditional or contemporary homes.
We were inspired by the popular trend for industrial architecture seen in lighting, structural work and metal finishes. The Opus design naturally lends itself to this look with its striking blend of natural wood and a powder coated antique brass finish.
Interior Changes home design & consulting
The existing structure of this lake home leaned toward a mid-century remodel. Deciding what to emphasize and what to alter was the key to transporting this cottage back into the future. Everything was stained knotty pine and when the walls came down to open up the space we also lightened up with some paint. Reclaimed wood floors were hand chosen by the homeowner for this project...so when the shag carpet left, these beauties went in! The custom railing and metal work were all designed with a young family in mind.

One of our commercial designs was recently selected for a beautiful clubhouse/fitness center renovation; this eco-friendly community near Crystal City and Pentagon City features square wooden newels and wooden stringers finished with grey/metal semi-gloss paint to match vertical metal rods and handrail. This particular staircase was designed and manufactured to builder’s specifications, allowing for a complete metal balustrade system and carpet-dressed treads that meet building code requirements for the city of Arlington.CSC 1976-2020 © Century Stair Company ® All rights reserved.
Stairworks
This project was an external steel staircase with timber treads that was originally designed by the owner. We then shop drew it to his balustrade design and manufactured all the steel.
There were two big challenges with this project: angles and installation. For the design, we had to find the right angles and match them exactly in order to have the staircase fit where it needed to go. Then we had to be tactful in our installation to work around the trees to keep them intact. We used a small crane to lift as the steel balustrades were quite heavy and avoid the small tree.

Cream & Black Interior Design
The bespoke staircase sits delicately on the polished micro concrete floor, a great combination of raw industrial materials. We used the old roof rafters to make the stair treads: sandblasting and staining them to bring out the grain. Each tread is also illuminated with LED lights to enhance the architectural merit of the material

Weighing in at around 2,100 pounds this massive rebar handrail was fabricated inside the home due to its overwhelming weight.
This handrail was made out of #18 (2¼” diameter) rebar and the balusters are #10 (1¼” diameter) rebar. At the top of the stairs a 90 degree bend was required due to the post placement. Overall, this rebar handrail sets the tone for this old industrial look.
