This kitchen is a wheelchair accessible kitchen designed by Adam Thomas of Design Matters. With two separate height-adjustable worktops, acrylic doors and brushed steel handles for comfortable use with impaired grip. The two Corian worktops are fully height adjustable and have raised edges on all four sides to contain hot spills and reduce the risk of injury. The integrated sink is special depth to enable good wheelchair access with minimal plumbing supplies. Note the complete absence of trailing wires and plumbing supplies under worktop height. They are contained in a space behind the modesty panel. There are safety stops on all four edges of the rise and fall units, including the bottom edge of the modesty panel, to protect feet and wheelchair footplates. Shortlisted for the prestigious Stephen Lawrence National Architecture Award, and winning a RIBA South East Regional Award (2015), the kinetic Ancient Party Barn is a playful re-working of historic agricultural buildings for residential use. Our clients, a fashion designer and a digital designer, are avid collectors of reclaimed architectural artefacts. Together with the existing fabric of the barn, their discoveries formed the material palette. The result – part curation, part restoration – is a unique interpretation of the 18th Century threshing barn. The design (2,295 sqft) subverts the familiar barn-conversion type, creating hermetic, introspective spaces set in open countryside. A series of industrial mechanisms fold and rotate the facades to allow for broad views of the landscape. When they are closed, they afford cosy protection and security. These high-tech, kinetic moments occur without harming the fabric and character of the existing, handmade timber structure. Liddicoat & Goldhill’s conservation specialism, combined with strong relationships with expert craftspeople and engineers lets the clients’ contemporary vision co-exist with the humble, historic barn architecture. A steel and timber mezzanine inside the main space creates an open-plan, master bedroom and bathroom above, and a cosy living area below. The mezzanine is supported by a tapering brick chimney inspired by traditional Kentish brick ovens; a cor-ten helical staircase cantilevers from the chimney. The kitchen is a free-standing composition of furniture at the opposite end of the barn space, combining new and reclaimed furniture with custom-made steel gantries. These ledges and ladders contain storage shelves and hanging space, and create a route up through the barn timbers to a floating ‘crows nest’ sleeping platform in the roof. Within the low-rise buildings reaching south from the main barn, a series of new ragstone interior walls, like the cattle stalls they replaced, delineate a series of simple sleeping rooms for guests.

So the surprise is even greater when a fully functional kitchen is revealed after it’s opened. This holistic project involved the design of a completely new space layout, as well as searching for perfect materials, furniture, decorations and tableware to match the already existing elements of the house. The key challenge concerning this project was to improve the layout, which was not functional and proportional. Balance on the interior between contemporary and retro was the key to achieve the effect of a coherent and welcoming space. Passionate about vintage, the client possessed a vast selection of old trinkets and furniture. The main focus of the project was how to include the sideboard,(from the 1850’s) which belonged to the client’s grandmother, and how to place harmoniously within the aerial space. To create this harmony, the tones represented on the sideboard’s vitrine were used as the colour mood for the house. The sideboard was placed in the central part of the space in order to be visible from the hall, kitchen, dining room and living room. The kitchen fittings are aligned with the worktop and top part of the chest of drawers. Green-grey glazing colour is a common element of all of the living spaces. In the the living room, the stage feeling is given by it’s main actor, the grand piano and the cabinets of curiosities, which were rearranged around it to create that effect. A neutral background consisting of the combination of soft walls and minimalist furniture in order to exhibit retro elements of the interior. Long live the vintage!

The back of the peninsula is clad in porcelain tile that wraps up from the floor. The tile is patterned to look like grayed rough-sawn wood. Above the refrigerator is an integrated wine rack. The bottles fit in holes carved out of a block of wood fiber insulation to keep them from warming due to the heat generated by the refrigerator. The smaller holes allow heat to escape from behind.
