Our clients in East Horsley had a vision for their new home, which involved a lot of research and planning as they undertook significant works. To create their new home, they chose to gut the property from top to toe, including updating electrics and plumbing, as well as adding a large rear extension to create a new open plan kitchen area. To create the light, bright and open space in the new kitchen, the extension features 2 sets of bifold doors on adjacent walls, allowing our clients to completely open up almost 6metres of wall space and enjoy the free flow access onto the garden and flood the room with fresh air and light. As well as the two sets of FD85® bifold doors, additional light was created in the kitchen by the addition of a large modular Pure Glass Flat Roof Light. With its minimal, sleek frame and aluminium beams, the Pure Glass Flat Roof Light creates a breath-taking centrepiece. Our clients matched the anthracite grey frame of the bifold doors for continuity between their glazing in the extension. A historic, rambling country estate gets a new kitchen, butler's pantry, bar, built-in desk and built-in TV cabinet. Elegant finishes and a few rustic touches help to fit this project into the original 1710 setting. Cabinetry is a beaded inset door in a mix of a hand glazed white stained finish and a furniture-type of burnished finish that is distressed but still has a sheen to it. The main countertops are honed Taj Mahal quartzite. The desk top matches the island cabinetry and the bar top is copper which has a lovely patina to it. The kitchen features a flush inset Sub Zero installation and a flush inset Wolf wall oven installation. The hood is a custom stainless piece with brass strapping. The glass door cabinets feature light roping that tucks in behind the face frames. The whole project is exquisitely decorated and accessorized. The clients engaged Le Gourmet Kitchen to design a kitchen that complemented their Mediterranean Styled home. The key was to provide a setting conducive to cooking along with ample countertops for entertaining. The kitchen was small in comparison to the rest of the home so opening the kitchen to the family room created a Great Room and increased visual space. The existing floor plan still lacked the room to incorporate everything the clients requested. The original plan featured a walk in and Butler’s pantry adjacent to the kitchen. We integrated these areas to increase the square footage. This required removing a structural sheer wall and engineering a sizable steel beam with posts to carry the load. These were concealed inside the mantel hood and opposing pantry cabinets. The added space gave us the area needed to provide the family the kitchen they desired. The featured S/S and glass fronted appliances balance the environment, whilst the wood counters softens the room and provides a great food preparation surface. The seating area incorporates tambour doors, when opened reveal everything necessary to pay bills, do homework or select a recipe for tomorrow’s dinner. 1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle! You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe you’re planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. 3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste.
