The design of this remodel of a small two-level residence in Noe Valley reflects the owner’s passion for Japanese architecture. Having decided to completely gut the interior partitions, we devised a better arranged floor plan with traditional Japanese features, including a sunken floor pit for dining and a vocabulary of natural wood trim and casework. Vertical grain Douglas Fir takes the place of Hinoki wood traditionally used in Japan. Natural wood flooring, soft green granite and green glass backsplashes in the kitchen further develop the desired Zen aesthetic. A wall to wall window above the sunken bath/shower creates a connection to the outdoors. Privacy is provided through the use of switchable glass, which goes from opaque to clear with a flick of a switch. We used in-floor heating to eliminate the noise associated with forced-air systems.

Three level island...
The homeowner’s wanted a large galley style kitchen with island. It was important to the wife the island be unique and serve many purposes. Our team used Google Sketchup to produce and present concept after concept. Each revision brought us closer to what you see. The final design boasted a two sided island (yes, there is storage under the bar) 6” thick cantilevered bar ledge over a steel armature, and waterfall counter tops on both ends. On one end we had a slit fabricated to receive one side of a tempered glass counter top. The other side is supported by a stainless steel inverted U. The couple usually enjoys breakfast or coffee and the morning news at this quaint spot.

We took out the pantry and extended the cabinet and countertop down to the patio door so we didn't lose storage, maximized counter space and made the kitchen feel more open

Being that the homeowners enjoy entertaining and have such a large space to do so, a wet bar with plenty of storage was added. A copper wine glass rack was custom made for the bar and display’s wine glasses in a decorative way.
Designer Brittany Hutt specified Homecrest Cabinetry’s Rainer door style in the color Maple Ginger with a Wheat Finish. The kitchen and wet bar include stacked upper cabinets with lift up glass door fronts and inside LED lighting to highlight the décor displayed inside. For the countertops Pompeii Quartz in the color Black Magic was chosen. The cabinets were complete with sleek Off Center Pulls in a Matte Chrome Finish from Atlas Hardware. To integrate a contemporary coastal design element, the Caicos Blue Beach Glass Mosaic in the color Teal from Marazzi was selected for both the kitchen and wet bar backsplash.

La zona pranzo e la cucina sono adiacenti, e sono all'interno dell'open space che contiene l'intera zona giorno.
Il lampadario è composto da 19 lampade in borosilicato e sottolinea la posizione del tavolo da pranzo.

In order to create a more intimate and warm feeling in the existing kitchen, we installed 3 over sized pendants that combined the silver and gold tones that would be simultaneously experienced in the sitting area adjacent to the kitchen. We also purchased new wood counter stools in a textured multi-toned fabric that directly related to the light fixtures

This kitchen is harmonious with adjacent spaces to bring in a touch of aqua and reintroducing a brown tone which repeats at the stairs and living room wall. The kitchen is an architectural statement with hidden and motorized cabinets.

The bulthaup b3 pocket door unit is home to all of the everyday kitchen elements that often clutter a worktop. The interior of the unit is finished in Walnut veneer bringing warm and visual interest to the space.
The cabinet is flanked by Gaggenau cooling appliances.
*Please note, hobsons|choice designed and created the kitchen. All of the other visible decor was sourced by our client.
