Our client wanted a separate baking center to allow multiple chefs to work in the kitchen at the same time. The addition of a built-in mixer lift and raised baking counter is a convenient luxury for the resident baker.

Cozy Kitchen looking into Great Room

Even with an open floor plan, our clients desired a "cozy kitchen" from the start. Instead of enclosing the kitchen, it is scaled down to one-story and warmed by exposed beam and wood stained beadboard ceiling. The kitchen opens to the two-story great room with dining and living. A generous bank of two-story windows face the east-west axis for maximum natural light. The flooring is 6" white oak. The kitchen island is custom-made marble top. At the back of the great room, behind sliding barn doors, is our client's painting studio.

Japanese Inspired Remodel in Noe Valley

The design of this remodel of a small two-level residence in Noe Valley reflects the owner's passion for Japanese architecture. Having decided to completely gut the interior partitions, we devised a better-arranged floor plan with traditional Japanese features, including a sunken floor pit for dining and a vocabulary of natural wood trim and casework. Vertical grain Douglas Fir takes the place of Hinoki wood traditionally used in Japan. Natural wood flooring, soft green granite and green glass backsplashes in the kitchen further develop the desired Zen aesthetic. A wall to wall window above the sunken bath/shower creates a connection to the outdoors. Privacy is provided through the use of switchable glass, which goes from opaque to clear with a flick of a switch. We used in-floor heating to eliminate the noise associated with forced-air systems.

The cooking appliances including a double-oven, below-counter speed oven, and induction range are surrounded by countertops to allow for excellent cooking efficiency. An in-counter compost bin lid helps for quick clean up, while all of the trash, compost, and recycling are kept in the same pull-out drawer to keep them out of sight. The kitchen was designed to take advantage of existing frosted windows which supplement the overhead and under-cabinet lighting, illuminating the working surface from all angles.
