The Owner's charge was to create a Black & White kitchen that was RED all over. Michael Johnson Cabinetmaker did a superb job of fabricating the cabinets and even more importantly finishing them to our specifications. The black and white checkerboard ceramic tile floor added to the color pattern. The 1x1 Interstyle red tile inlaid into the Interstyle white tile backsplash brought even more red to the project. The stainless steel Wolf Range with the red knobs contributed not only a great cooking system but a splash of red to the project. The glass block window replaced a smaller window in order to bring more natural light into the space without compromising privacy.

This project involved re-working the existing interior layout to give the home a new, open concept floor plan, breaking up the feeling of four separate rooms on the first floor. We met our clients’ needs through the following: We built a designated area for their three kids to enjoy snacks and do their homework after school. There are three regular cooks in the home, so an open space was created that was suitable for 2-3 chefs to work comfortably. Because the clients love to look up new recipe and meal ideas, a separate desk area for their computer, with internet access, was created. We incorporated clients’ love of the bead board look within the cabinetry. We incorporated an accessible and aesthetically pleasing three shelf built-in space within the island to store cookbooks and other belongings. Improved previous interior lighting by adding three hanging lights over the island, updating ceiling lighting and building French doors in the dining room space. Made the kitchen open to the living room so family and guests can continuously interact. Spice storage was a concern, so we built a four row pull-out spice rack near the stove. New kitchen appliances were creatively incorporated that were not originally there. A total of four interior walls were removed to create the open concept floor plan. We faced a constraint when we had to install a structural LVL beam since we removed a load bearing wall. We also met design challenges, such as adding pantry storage, natural lighting, spice storage, trash pull-outs and enough space to comfortably fit at least three chefs in the kitchen at a time, within the existing footprint of the house. The clients had waited 11 years for a new kitchen and they didn’t want to hold back on what they really wanted. The clients finally received a creative and practical kitchen, while still staying within their budget.

Beautifully understated, this kitchen was designed, supplied and installed by Saffron Interiors. The Belsay shaker doors in 'Cashmere' are fitted with a simple art-deco styled brass handle to offer a clean and timeless look. The Mistral resin worktops in 'Atacalma' allows for seamless joints throughout which offers a sleek, hygenic finish to the surfaces. The encaustic tiled splashback adds a touch of drama and colour to create interest on the rear walls.

A load bearing support column was concealed and worked into the design by wrapping it with custom cabinetry millwork which was mirrored on the opposing side to create symmetry. The columns are now the bookends to beautiful double-sided glass cabinets which offer a display case for the client's china and help to keep the open feel. The custom wood hood and backsplash tile are the focal point of the adjacent wall. Photo credit: Patsy McEnroe http://patsymcenroe.com/

This kitchen is full of fun elements that reflect the clients personality. Taking their favorite color into consideration, purple was used as an accent and incorporated into the display cube making it a focal point in the kitchen. This accent color highlights the small flecks of amethyst within the countertop material that is continued through the waterfall peninsula and surrounds the fireplace in the adjacent room. Because of the long run of large windows in this kitchen, we had the opportunity to design with primarily base cabinets making the space feel very open and airy and maximized the amount of natural light coming in. In order to break up the long run of cabinetry, we intentionally designed a darker finish around the Galley Workstation. Having a great view of the beautiful backyard is an added bonus!

Like most homes that were built as part of a development project in Thousand oaks the kitchen in this home was extremely small and enclosed from all sides with only 2 small pathways leading to it. The first think on the list was to remove the largest wall and opening the space to the living area. The kitchen is comprised from an L-shape gray cabinets and a 11' long peninsula from pewter colored cabinet and a fantastic black noir countertop. The peninsula acts as a division between the living area and the kitchen. a large window brings a lot of natural light into the space and the light pastel almost colored backsplash adds a light and bright contrast to the grays and black colors of the kitchen. The large dark cabinet pulls tie together the two portions of the kitchen.

The U-shaped kitchen features a peninsula for extra countertop prep space and a "hidden" cabinet-panel dishwasher. The new, sliding glass doors flood warm light into the breakfast area, creating a cozy spot for morning coffee. A cabinetry-style pantry is tucked into a formerly unused wall void at the far left, adding extra storage space that our clients have always desired.
