Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   This client wanted a complete update of their kitchen and came to us with several objectives. They wanted a larger island and easier access to the dining room. They also wanted to eliminate the existing cooktop location from the island and make the island larger. Because the existing space was not able to accommodate all those requests, we decided to eliminate the breakfast area and incorporate that space into the kitchen. By eliminating an existing bay window and making the kitchen sink window larger, we were able to make the new layout work without sacrificing any natural light. A French door to the newly added and adjoining sunroom and casual outdoor dining spot still allows for multiple dining options. And by enlarging the opening to the dining room, it allows for easier access to this space on a daily basis versus for special occasions only. The client already had a large desk in the kitchen and spends a lot of time at this area. We were able to make the new desk even larger by moving the refrigerator to another area. The refrigerator is covered in decorative panels so that it blends nicely into the furniture look of the room. The larger island can now seat several people comfortably. The room’s traditional feel was achieved by providing different finishes on the perimeter, island and desk cabinetry. Handmade gray backsplash tile, a combination of soapstone and Carrera marble give the space a classic appeal. Details provide interest – custom glass mullions, decorative wood hood and bronze hardware give the space character and charm. Off-white Decora maple cabinets, an Ethan Allen chandelier and Seapearl quartzite grey and green countertops transformed an outdated kitchen into a peaceful sanctuary. A high gloss ceramic handmade tile, Light Ocean from Quemere International, reflects light from the kitchen's large window. Stamped concrete island cabinets provide an enchanting color contrast to the Chantille cabinets. Amish wood stools offer understated seating. Top Knobs trunk pulls in polished nickel contribute to this kitchen’s high class. The existing kitchen floor plan in this 20-year-old Fairfax Station did not require enlarging. The homeowners upgraded to a double oven and converted from electric to gas. In the breakfast room, a Hinkley chandelier above a Lee Industries table accommodates eight, with an open view of an updated fireplace. After removing the wall between living and breakfast rooms, in-house lead carpenter Bruce designed and built the classic columns on either side of the arch between the rooms. The rooms are painted in Benjamin Moore Titanium, and the wet bar boasts an Arabesque Carrara marble backsplash. Photographer Greg Hadley

The style and design of this kitchen was a compromise for the husband and wife who each had ideas of their ideal kitchen. He liked glazed raised panel cabinets and she liked a cleaner look with lighter color cabinets. We were able to totally customize it for these clients with a custom island for prep and seating area, spice drawer, plenty of drawers for large pots and pans, 2 pull out trash cabinets one by sink and one in the island, interior lights for the upper glass cabinets and metal banding on custom hood. We are thrilled with how this kitchen turned out!

The open layout and modern design kitchen made this 100 yr. old home feel extremely elegant. The custom herringbone floor design with the porcelain wood tile was a showpiece. The all white cabinets with carrera marble countertops went great with the grey glass back splash. The face of the bar was custom built but the raised paneling and Victorian corbels lent themselves to the period of the home.
