The master bath in this Franklin Estate home was original to the early ’90s and ready for a complete gut and makeover. The layout worked well for both husband and wife, but they were ready for new high-end amenities. Adding a fully programmable heated floor, custom cabinetry topped with gorgeous quartz, and a completely custom remote-controlled electrical system were just a few of the luxuries. The new spa shower with rain head and handheld Hansgrohe fixtures are perfect for a quick morning wakeup or end-of-the-day relaxing soak. A must-have for “her” was the Kohler Sunstruck oval freestanding heated bubble massage air bath, that replaced the old clunky built-in corner tub. A clean, contemporary, spa-like master bathroom was on the list for this new construction home. The floating double vanity and linen storage feature sealed and varnished plank sap walnut doors with the horizontal grain matching end to end, contrasting with the dark gray tile throughout. The freestanding soaking tub is constructed of blue-stone, a composite of quartzite and bio-resin that is durable, anti-microbial, eco-friendly, and feels like natural stone. The expansive shower is adorned with modern Milano fixtures and integrated lighting for a true luxurious experience. This bathroom is open and spacious with high ceilings and even a sky light. Because this space is so open, we incorporated cabinetry throughout to add additional storage in the space. The shower is spacious and relaxing with 12" x 24" large tiles at a 50/50 pattern and a tiled pan shower flooring.

Master Bathroom Remodel, took a 90's track house bathroom with heavy soffits and L-shaped vanity - and turned it into a Modern Spanish Revival inspired oasis, with two arched openings framing personal vanities with furniture grade details. Iron sconces flank arched dressing mirrors. Custom hand-painted terra-cotta tile backsplash. The shower was expanded and a foot ledge pony wall separates the shower from the space for a freestanding soaking tub. The shower is tiled with an accent of hand-painted terra-cotta tiles, balanced by other budget friendly tiles and materials. Terracotta shower floor and floor tile ground the space with authentic Mediterranean flavor.

THE SETUP Upon moving to Glen Ellyn, the homeowners were eager to infuse their new residence with a style that resonated with their modern aesthetic sensibilities. The primary bathroom, while spacious and structurally impressive with its dramatic high ceilings, presented a dated, overly traditional appearance that clashed with their vision. Design objectives: Transform the space into a serene, modern spa-like sanctuary. Integrate a palette of deep, earthy tones to create a rich, enveloping ambiance. Employ a blend of organic and natural textures to foster a connection with nature. THE REMODEL Design challenges: Take full advantage of the vaulted ceiling Source unique marble that is more grounding than fanciful Design minimal, modern cabinetry with a natural, organic finish Offer a unique lighting plan to create a sexy, Zen vibe Design solutions: To highlight the vaulted ceiling, we extended the shower tile to the ceiling and added a skylight to bathe the area in natural light. Sourced unique marble with raw, chiseled edges that provide a tactile, earthy element. Our custom-designed cabinetry in a minimal, modern style features a natural finish, complementing the organic theme. A truly creative layered lighting strategy dials in the perfect Zen-like atmosphere. The wavy protruding wall tile lights triggered our inspiration but came with an unintended harsh direct-light effect so we sourced a solution: bespoke diffusers measured and cut for the top and bottom of each tile light gap. THE RENEWED SPACE The homeowners dreamed of a tranquil, luxurious retreat that embraced natural materials and a captivating color scheme. Our collaborative effort brought this vision to life, creating a bathroom that not only meets the clients’ functional needs but also serves as a daily sanctuary. The carefully chosen materials and lighting design enable the space to shift its character with the changing light of day. “Trust the process and it will all come together,” the home owners shared. “Sometimes we just stand here and think, ‘Wow, this is lovely!'”

This traditional primary bath is just what the client had in mind. The changes included separating the vanities to his and hers, moving the shower to the opposite wall and adding the freestanding tub. The details gave the traditional look the client wanted in the space including double stack crown, framing around the mirrors, mullions in the doors with mirrors, and feet at the bottom of the vanities. The beaded inset cabinets with glass knobs also added to make the space feel clean and special. To keep the palate clean we kept the cabinetry a soft neutral and white quartz counter and and tile in the shower. The floor tile in marble with the beige square matched perfectly with the neutral theme.

Master bathroom, double custom vanity

This master bathroom was plain and boring, but was full of potential when we began this renovation. With a vaulted ceiling and plenty of room, this space was ready for a complete transformation. The wood accent wall ties in beautifully with the exposed wooden beams across the ceiling. The chandelier and more modern elements like the tilework and soaking tub balance the rustic aspects of this design to keep it cozy but elegant.

By removing a linen closet and step up whirlpool tub we were able to open up this Master to create a spacious and calming master bath.
