From Weeds to Welcome Home!

Just in Thyme Landscape Design

The new walkway connects the front door to the sidewalk and to the new paver driveway. The brick edging matches the burgundy shutters of the house. We hand picked palettes of Connecticut Bluestone with lots of burgundy colors in it to give the walkway 'pizazz' as the client requested and to coordinate with the house colors. The plants were just planted but will soon fill the yard with low maintenance, lush evergreen shrubs & grasses that are watered infrequently by drip irrigation rings. Red and purple flowering perennials will pop amidst the different shades of green. The gradual decline of the walkway from the front door provides easy wheelchair access instead of the old steps.

Thick Tennessee Crab Orchard Stone slabs create the steps. The slabs were snap cut to retain a natural feel. Virginia mined Sandstone blocks pick up the same color range and were used to create stone walls along the stone path. The garden primarily consists of serpentine swaths of Liriope spicata and Euonymus coloratus. These two plants work well to retain the soil and have kept erosion from being a problem. Additional species were added and nestled in close to the walk for garden interest. Blue sedges, white flowering geranium, dwarf mounding boxwoods and dwarf wintercreeper are visible in this picture. Decide which plants to use

The greenery you choose is critical to your look. For example, if you’re trying to create a tropical garden palm trees and bamboo are your go-to options. Other popular options are golden cane palm trees and fern for ground cover. From there you can add some colour with bright flowers like frangipani, hibiscus or bromeliads. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
