Our kitchen and bath designer, Claire, worked with the clients to design an amazing new kitchen (dubbed Not Your Average Island). The clients’ biggest headache was that the kitchen didn’t function for their family. They were limited with their current seating arrangement, their countertops were filled with appliances, proper storage solutions were lacking and the space was just not working well for them. With the banquette for the children to comfortably do their afternoon homework, additional island seating and enhanced function throughout, our designer Claire completely transformed this space. Her expertise created a one-of-a-kind (definitely not your average) island that was designed specifically for this wonderful family and allowed her to find a home for every piece and part (and more!) the homeowners use every day and the clients love their new kitchen! With tall ceilings, an impressive stone fireplace, and original wooden beams, this home in Glen Ellyn, a suburb of Chicago, had plenty of character and a style that felt coastal. Six months into the purchase of their home, this family of six contacted Alessia Loffredo and Sarah Coscarelli of ReDesign Home to complete their home’s renovation by tackling the kitchen. “Surprisingly, the kitchen was the one room in the home that lacked interest due to a challenging layout between kitchen, butler pantry, and pantry,” the designer shared, “the cabinetry was not proportionate to the space’s large footprint and height. None of the house’s architectural features were introduced into kitchen aside from the wooden beams crossing the room throughout the main floor including the family room.” She moved the pantry door closer to the prepping and cooking area while converting the former butler pantry a bar. Alessia designed an oversized hood around the stove to counterbalance the impressive stone fireplace located at the opposite side of the living space. She then wanted to include functionality, using Trim Tech‘s cabinets, featuring a pair with retractable doors, for easy access, flanking both sides of the range. The client had asked for an island that would be larger than the original in their space – Alessia made the smart decision that if it was to increase in size it shouldn’t increase in visual weight and designed it with legs, raised above the floor. Made out of steel, by Wayward Machine Co., along with a marble-replicating porcelain countertop, it was designed with durability in mind to withstand anything that her client’s four children would throw at it. Finally, she added finishing touches to the space in the form of brass hardware from Katonah Chicago, with similar toned wall lighting and faucet.

As part of a rear extension leading to a garden via two sets of bi-folding doors, this bright open plan kitchen comprises a larger lifestyle space with a living and dining area. It was designed by Jo Johal, managing director of Vogue Kitchens, using furniture by premium German brand, Leicht. The client has a large family, is a keen cook and likes to regularly entertain, so the kitchen was designed with those requirements in mind. This contemporary handleless kitchen features a wealth of storage with one wall featuring a run of tall lacquered gloss cabinets in Frosty White colourway with carcases in Platinum, together with overhead cupboards in the same finish that are lit from beneath via LED’s. Further undercounter units and pull-out drawers are also in Platinum and integrated within the undercounter storage is a 60cm Siemens dishwasher. Internal storage is highly detailed with lots of shelving, drawer units and a full cookware centre incorporated. Breaking the run of overhead units is a section of backlit decorative shelving for glassware and crockery. To the right of the kitchen the tall units include an integrated fridge and freezer, and to the left there are further tall cabinets that house a bank of ovens by Siemens, which include a 60cm oven next to a 45cm steam oven with a 14cm warming drawer beneath – all fitted at waist level to make it easier to view what’s cooking. Situated within the Quartzform worktop against the back wall is a wet area for food preparation with a sink and tap by Blanco and a Boiling Water Tap by Quooker. The central island is designed so that the cook can face out to the room, whilst entertaining. It is also designed in an L-shape to accommodate seating on two sides. The undercounter units are featured in a laminate finish in Liton grey colourway and the Quartzform worktop in Veined Michelangelo corresponds with the same worktop colour behind. Installed within are two types of hobs, a 90cm gas hob and 30cm domino induction hob, all by Siemens. A the front of the island is a 60cm wine cooler by Caple, while a ceiling extractor by Air Uno is directly above. Three long pendant lights are located above the island.

This beautiful French Provincial home is set on 10 acres, nestled perfectly in the oak trees. The original home was built in 1974 and had two large additions added; a great room in 1990 and a main floor master suite in 2001. This was my dream project: a full gut renovation of the entire 4,300 square foot home! I contracted the project myself, and we finished the interior remodel in just six months. The exterior received complete attention as well. The 1970s mottled brown brick went white to completely transform the look from dated to classic French. Inside, walls were removed and doorways widened to create an open floor plan that functions so well for everyday living as well as entertaining. The white walls and white trim make everything new, fresh and bright. It is so rewarding to see something old transformed into something new, more beautiful and more functional.

The homeowner of this new build came to us for help with the design of their new home. They wanted a more contemporary look than what they're used to. The large island is a great gathering point with in the open concept of the dining/kitchen/living space. Using two different colors of quartz countertops added contrast that highlights the marble backsplash. The backsplash adds texture and richness to the space. Shaker style cabinets help modernize the space with the clean lines. Function was key to this kitchen working with utensil pullouts, spice racks, rollouts, hidden storage and a knife block. Design Connection, Inc. Kansas City interior designer provided space planning, architectural drawings, barstools, tile, plumbing fixtures, countertops, cabinets and hardware, lighting, paint colors, coordination with the builder and project management to ensure that the high standards of Design Connection, Inc. were maintained.

The homeowners wanted a more modern feel with a classic touch, and this was achieved with classic white cabinetry topped with leathered granite on the surround and a showstopping Quartz for the island that is a work of art. Playing on textures and finishes, the beveled marble backsplash draws the eyes to the focal point of the room, the mantle style vent hood. Keeping symmetry the star, two Circa Lighting pendants command attention. Not letting style get all the attention, this kitchen lacks no modern conveniences such as a water dispensing station, beverage center, and top of the line appliances. For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Consider what your cooking style is for a start - Italy is known for its cuisine, so italian kitchen designs are generally popular.
