We designed a wine cellar and a tasting room located off the dining room. The space had been a jalousy porch at grade level, with access from outdoors. It had windows all around and skylights in the roof. We removed all of the windows and skylights, and reframed the structure. We also raised the floor so the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter wouldn't effect the temperature of the floor in the wine cellar, which could lead to condensation issues. We opened up a wall in the dining room and constructed a small staircase so entry into the space is from the dining room. We constructed a wall the width of the room to separate the tasting room from the wine cellar. This view is looking at the left side of that wall.

A few different types of wine bottle showcasing techniques were used in the wine storage space, including high reveal display, horizontal display, arches coved trays, wine case storage, curved countertops, and overhead racking. At the entrance to the wine cellar is a custom distinguished distressed redwood door and above the door hangs suspended racking that you’ll only find in a custom wine cellar. Finally, perhaps the most dramatic feature of the wine room is its regal custom flooring. Visitors will also notice the undeniable flowing design of the large wine cellar created by gentle curves of the countertop and racking. The subtle curves not only enhance the flow of the walk in wine cellar, the curved display racking fans bottles out before the visitor and the arches above the redwood countertops complete the rounded aesthetic of the cellar. Another unique feature of this walk in wine cellar is the uncommon shape of the room. Because of the irregular angles of the former bedroom, emphasis was placed on creating a space that was visitor friendly and still contained plenty of wine storage and display racking. A multi room space dedicated to the full wine experience. An ornamental iron gate welcomes guests through a rustic stone hallway with recessed niches and reclaimed brick arched ceiling. An ante room with Venetian plaster walls and mahogany T&G ceiling, perfect for wine decanting and hors d'oeuvres, is adjacent to the wine cellar of Cambara Mahogany wine racking and millwork with soapstone counter. A large octagonal tasting room featuring walls of New England Fieldstone and a mahogany T&G ceiling accentuated with mahogany beams. Stunning!

This beautiful cellar was designed and built for maximum storage in a fairly small space. We managed to get 3,000 bottles in capacity using double deep racks and a waterfall feature centered in the cellar ending with a tasting. In this photo, you can see the residential wine cellar door and front walls, which were made with wooden frame and glass panels. You can also see the beautiful wine barrel flooring from Fontenay, which was constructed from the outer portions of the barrel heads. The tasting table at the center added character to the cellar. Too many times I have seen light above crown molding, calling attention to drywall- the cheapest surface in the entire room. Adding a secondary molding below allowed me to illuminate the cherry multi-piece crown itself, and provide just the right glow on the ceiling, too.
