Reconfigured First Floor for Better Living

We were excited to work with this client for a third time! This time they asked Thompson Remodeling to revamp the main level of their home to better support their lifestyle. The existing closed floor plan had all four of the main living spaces as individual rooms. We listened to their needs and created a design that included removing some walls and switching up the location of a few rooms for better flow. The new and improved floor plan features an open kitchen (previously the enclosed den) and living room area with fully remodeled kitchen. We removed the walls in the dining room to create a larger dining room and den area and reconfigured the old kitchen space into a first floor laundry room/powder room combo. Lastly, we created a rear mudroom at the back entry to the home.

Rodwin Architecture & Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, USA Interior design, space planning and architectural details converge thoughtfully in this transformative project. A 15-year old, 9,000 sf. home with generic interior finishes and odd layout needed bold, modern, fun and highly functional transformation for a large bustling family. To redefine the soul of this home, texture and light were given primary consideration. Elegant contemporary finishes, a warm color palette and dramatic lighting defined modern style throughout. A cascading chandelier by Stone Lighting in the entry makes a strong entry statement. Walls were removed to allow the kitchen/great/dining room to become a vibrant social center. A minimalist design approach is the perfect backdrop for the diverse art collection. Yet, the home is still highly functional for the entire family. We added windows, fireplaces, water features, and extended the home out to an expansive patio and yard. The cavernous beige basement became an entertaining mecca, with a glowing modern wine-room, full bar, media room, arcade, billiards room and professional gym. Bathrooms were all designed with personality and craftsmanship, featuring unique tiles, floating wood vanities and striking lighting. DESIGN BRIEF “A family home to be lived in not just looked at” placed functionality as main priority in the extensive renovation of this coastal holiday home. Existing layout featured: – Inadequate bench space in the cooking zone – An impractical and overly large walk in pantry – Torturous angles in the design of the house made work zones cramped with a frenetic aesthetic at odds with the linear skylights creating disharmony and an unbalanced feel to the entire space. – Unappealing seating zones, not utilising the amazing view or north face space WISH LIST – Comfortable retreat for two people and extend family, with space for multiple cooks to work in the kitchen together or to a functional work zone for a couple. DESIGN SOLUTION – Removal of awkward angle walls creating more space for a larger kitchen – External angles which couldn’t be modified are hidden, creating a rational, serene space where the skylights run parallel to walls and fittings. NEW KITCHEN FEATURES – A highly functional layout with well-defined and spacious cooking, preparing and storage zones. – Generous bench space around cooktop and sink provide great workability in a small space – An inviting island bench for relaxing, working and entertaining for one or many cooks – A light filled interior with ocean views from several vantage points in the kitchen – An appliance/pantry with sliding for easy access to plentiful storage and hidden appliance use to keep the kitchen streamlined and easy to keep tidy. – A light filled interior with ocean views from several vantage points in the kitchen – Refined aesthetics which welcomes, relax and allows for individuality with warm timber open shelves curate collections that make the space feel like it’s a home always on holidays.

How do I add storage to my laundry?

A combination of storage solutions is key to running an efficient laundry. Include shelves above or beside the washing machine to store washing detergent, softener and other cleaning products; and laundry bins for dirty clothes. Consider a custom-built cupboard for an ironing board, so it can easily fold out when you need it, or mount the ironing board directly to the wall or on the back of a door.
