A stacked stone fireplace and hearth surround add to the organic elements in this beautiful, vaulted great room. Underneath the amber and copper-toned artwork hangs a mantel, matching the maple stained beams and woodwork that wrap the room’s perimeter. Greyed green chenille covers the sectional, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the fire. Behind the sectional sits a console, made of Brazilian Peroba Rosa reclaimed wood. Topping the console is a Teak root bowl filled with textured, marble balls. Hanging from the high vaulted ceiling is a Visual Comfort chandelier in bronze. The light, neutral ivory of the wall showcases the room’s rich, natural features.

The development of the architecture and the site were critical to blend the home into this well established, but evolving, neighborhood. One goal was to make the home appear as if it had been there 20 years. The home is designed on just under an acre of land with a primary concern of working around the old, established trees (all but one was saved). The exterior style, driven by the client’s taste of a modern Craftsman home, marries materials, finishes and technologies to create a very comfortable environment both inside and out. Sustainable materials and technologies throughout the home create a warm, comfortable, and casual home for the family of four. Considerations from air quality, interior finishes, exterior materials, plan layout and orientation, thermal envelope and energy efficient appliances give this home the warmth of a craftsman with the technological edge of a green home.

We designed and built this dramatic stone fireplace, the focal point of a rustic, lodge-style living room in a converted barn attached to an 1849 Greek Revival farmhouse. The chimney presents an elegant profile of white stucco. Part of a larger project for the television series "This Old House," the Rumford style fireplace features a substantial granite lintel, soapstone firesides, and charming hearth in granite, laid down in a playful wave pattern.
