The design of this remodel of a small two-level residence in Noe Valley reflects the owner's passion for Japanese architecture. Having decided to completely gut the interior partitions, we devised a better-arranged floor plan with traditional Japanese features, including a sunken floor pit for dining and a vocabulary of natural wood trim and casework. Vertical grain Douglas Fir takes the place of Hinoki wood traditionally used in Japan. Natural wood flooring, soft green granite and green glass backsplashes in the kitchen further develop the desired Zen aesthetic. A wall to wall window above the sunken bath/shower creates a connection to the outdoors. Privacy is provided through the use of switchable glass, which goes from opaque to clear with a flick of a switch. We used in-floor heating to eliminate the noise associated with forced-air systems.

Originally, this custom-built wood cabin in Central Saanich was rustic and stark, but with our work, we were able to help transform it into a modern rural retreat.
A key change in this home transformation was updating some of the more dated and unwelcoming design elements, including the floors. By removing the original 70's red carpets and strip Oak floors and replacing them with a Wide Plank, Pre-Finished Engineered Oak throughout, we were able to keep that secluded cabin feel all the while adding a modern refresh.

The American series revolutionizes
wood burning fireplaces with a bold
design and a tall, unobstructed flame
view that brings the natural beauty of
a wood fire to the forefront. Featuring an
oversized, single-swing door that’s easily
reversible for your opening preference,
there’s no unnecessary framework to
impede your view. A deep oversized
firebox further complements the flameforward
design, and the complete
management of outside combustion air
delivers unmatched burn control and
efficiency, giving you the flexibility to
enjoy the American series with the
door open, closed or fully removed.

A thoughtful collaboration brought this getaway home to realization. It started with our client’s desire to create a special gift to themselves, in the form of a retreat. We worked with a special team of design and construction experts to create a welcoming waterfront cottage to the family and all those who visit. Capturing views of the water, the home is comprised of curated spaces to gather, both inside and out, for our clients and their family and friends to enjoy.

A spacious open floor plan perfect for casual gatherings opens to a custom kitchen and enticing ocean view. A Cisco Bros sectional upholstered in a stainproof white fabric blends perfectly with warm white walls and an easy going lifestyle. Dynamic, original black and white artwork, by an esteemed local photographer, is the perfect counterpart to the balance and serenity of the space. A surfer catches a seemingly endless, surging swell: a testament to moving ever onward with singular focus and drive.
