The design of this home drew upon historical styles, preserving the essentials of the original movement while updating these elements with clean lines and modern materials. Peers Homestead drew upon the American Farmhouse. The architectural design was based on several factors: orientation with views and connection to seasonal water elements, glass cubes, simplistic form and material palette, and steel accents with structure and cladding. To capture views, the floor to ceiling windows in the great room bring in the natural environment into the home and were oriented to face the Spanish Peaks. The great room’s simple gable roof and square room shape, accompanied by the large glass walls and a high ceiling, create an impressive glass cube effect. Following a contemporary trend for windows, thin-frame, aluminum clad windows were utilized for the high performance qualities as well as the aesthetic appeal. (Photos by Whitney Kamman)

The original masonry fireplace, with brick veneer and floating steel framed hearth. The hearth was re-surfaced with a concrete, poured in place counter material. Low voltage, MR-16 recessed lights accent the fireplace and artwork. A small sidelight brings natural light in to wash the brick fireplace as well. Photo by Christopher Wright, CR

Level Three: We selected a suspension light (metal, glass and silver-leaf) as a key feature of the living room seating area to counter the bold fireplace. It lends drama (albeit, subtle) to the room with its abstract shapes. The silver planes become ephemeral when they reflect and refract the environment: high storefront windows overlooking big blue skies, roaming clouds and solid mountain vistas. Our expansive home addition and remodel added nearly fifty percent more living space to this Highland Park residence. The sunken great room captures light from French doors, ceiling-high windows and a Majestic® fireplace. The mudroom was customized to accommodate the family dogs. Upstairs, the master bedroom features a sunny window seat, and a second fireplace warms a bubbling “airbath” in the master bathroom. The shower glows with automated LED lights and the natural stone vanity sparkles with quartzite. Cup-pull handles and a Kohler® apron sink provide rustic balance to the contemporary “red dragon” island countertop in the renovated kitchen. New oak floors seamlessly unite the entire home.

This brick and stone residence on a large estate property is an American version of the English country house, and it pays homage to the work of Harrie T. Lindeberg, Edwin Lutyens and John Russell Pope, all practitioners of an elegant country style rooted in classicism. Features include bricks handmade in Maryland, a limestone entry and a library with coffered ceiling and stone floors. The interiors balance formal English rooms with family rooms in a more relaxed Arts and Crafts style. Landscape by Mark Beall and Sara Fairchild
